Art House
Screening Series
CineVegas to present Las Vegas with
exclusive screening series of Art House Films
This is a rare treat...as we do not have an Art House Theatre per se,
CineVegas is innovating—we will get the films, anyway. In January 2007,
the CineVegas Film Festival will host a series of films at the
Tropicana Cinemas (an inexpensive,
small theatre complex at Tropicana and Pecos), bringing
different independent, underground, foreign and documentary films each
week that otherwise wouldn’t be shown in Las Vegas.
The film series kicks off on Friday, January 12
SLEEPING DOGS LIE—a
dark comedy written and directed by Bobcat Goldthwait. The film explores
honesty, family, forgiveness and courage and probes relationships and
idealization of the absolute virtues of comedy.
SHERRYBABY—Maggie
Gyllenhaal stars as Sherry Swanson in “Sherrybaby”, for which she
received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress.
Friday, January 19
LUNACY—The
latest provocation from surrealist master Jan Svankmajer
Friday, January 26
TIDELAND
–Directed by visionary filmmaker Terry Gilliam—a young girl who embarks
on a strange journey with her father, played by Jeff Bridges, after her
mother passes away.
The film is a celebration of the resiliency of childhood and the
power of imagination.
Friday, February 2
OLD JOY—From
director Kelly Reichardt.
Tickets
to
all screenings are $8 for general admission and $6 for students, seniors
and military, and matinees (first show of the day). Tickets can be
purchased at the Tropicana Cinemas box office. For more information,
please call (702) 992-7979 or visit the CineVegas Screening Series
website at
www.cvarthouse.com.

The Bangkok Post - reported recently, "A Best Kept Secret"
This is what jazz
singers do. If they're good, they can open up new insights and add new
layers of meaning and excitement to a song. They can create an
atmosphere in which you feel that things are happening. Parris Lane is
interesting, original and she's good...

An All
Balanchine Celebration:
FROM
TCHAIKOVSKY TO GERSHWIN
Choreography:
George Balanchine
Music: Pytor Ilych
Tchaikovsky and George Gershwin
Bold, brilliant, and Balanchine! Four exciting dance experiences all
feature Balanchine's signature combination of classical steps
choreographed in a bold, modern, and physically demanding style. Enjoy
fiery Allegro Brilliante, a daring Tchaikovsky Pas de deux,
a light and lively Tarantella, and Who Cares?, Mr. B's
celebration and tribute to Broadway!
In celebration of
NBT’s 35th Anniversary, the company is presenting an evening
solely comprised of works choreographed by George Balanchine.
Affectionately known as “Mr. B” to those in the dance world, this is the
first time NBT has done this type of program.
George Balanchine: (bio taken from
www.balanchine.org)
Born
in St. Petersburg, Russia, George Balanchine (1904-1983) is regarded as
the foremost contemporary choreographer in the world of ballet. He came
to the United States in late 1933, at the age of 29, accepting the
invitation of the young American arts patron Lincoln Kirstein (1907-96),
whose great passions included the dream of creating a ballet company in
America. At Balanchine's behest, Kirstein was also prepared to support
the formation of an American academy of ballet that would eventually
rival the long-established schools of Europe.
