Governor Jim Gibbons, joined
by Las Vegas Mayor Oscar B.
Goodman and announced the
appointment of Lawrence
Weekly to Clark County
Commission for District D.
Lawrence replaces retiring
Clark County Commissioner,
Yvonne Atkinson Gates.
“I
am pleased to announce that
Las Vegas City Councilman
Lawrence Weekly will serve
as Clark County Commissioner
for District D. Throughout
his time in public service
Lawrence has served in
several different capacities
of local government and has
an impressive record of
commitment to his
community,” said Governor
Gibbons. “The selection
process was difficult and
required a thoughtful
evaluation of the many
qualified and capable
candidates. I am confident
that Lawrence will represent
the people of District D
with honor and integrity and
I look forward to working
with him in the future.”
“I
am deeply honored by
Governor Gibbons’ faith in
me and my abilities to serve
the constituents of District
D. I look forward to the
broadened role and
responsibilities that this
position brings. It is now
up to me to work to continue
what we’ve collectively
accomplished in the area.
In addition to that, I think
it is healthy that I’ve
served on the City Council.
I think it is important that
we work together, as a City
and a County to provide
excellence in public service
to our citizens. It’s what
they expect,” said Lawrence
Weekly.
Lawrence Weekly is a native
Nevadan who has spent the
better part of 20 years
working to address the needs
of his community. He was
first appointed to serve as
Councilman for Ward 5 in
2001 and is widely known and
respected for his commitment
to community revitalization
and redevelopment. Lawrence
has also served on the
Southern Nevada Regional
Planning Coalition, the
Clark County Board of
Health, the State Commission
on Aging, and is well known
for his town hall meetings,
many of which are conducted
in Spanish.
"Councilman
Lawrence Weekly has been an
extremely effective public
official and I and the
entire Las Vegas City
Council will be sad to see
him go," said Las Vegas
Mayor Oscar B. Goodman. "I
know in his new capacity he
will do great things for
Commission D residents."
Clark
County Commission Chairman
Rory Reid said he looks
forward to working with
Lawrence Weekly. “On
behalf of the entire county
commission, I welcome
Lawrence Weekly to our
board,” Reid said. “He
brings experience and a
thorough knowledge of his
constituents’ needs, and
will be a great asset to the
commission.” |
