February 2007

This February is a busy month...it's always one of the busier months of the year, but this year has a couple of special additions to the normal February. February is the shortest month of the year, but Las Vegas has packed it full---not only are there a couple hundred different conventions coming to town both large and small (the biggest one being MAGIC with 115k attendees,) but there is also the Super Bowl in the first weekend, "The Producers" officially opens, Valentines Day in the middle of the month, the NBA All-Star Game is going to bring in tons of people, and there are a variety of other shows that will be making their entrance into the Vegas market. It is a time when new shows open and old shows change their venues or their substance. February is always the start of changes as the city looks ahead to the summer. Late winter and early spring are good times to get shows opened so that they can establish themselves prior to the big summer season.

The Super Bowl is THE biggest weekend in Las Vegas---it brings in more people and money into the city than any other weekend all year, and this year is looking to be the biggest of all. Sports books are predicting that the numbers on the Bears and the Colts will be the biggest numbers ever posted for any Super Bowl. The early line on the game favors the Colts by 7 points. No matter where you go, there will be monitors with the game on and there will be parties everywhere.

Las Vegas is the capital of many things, but it certainly becomes apparent that during February, we are the wedding capital of the world. Valentines Day brings thousands of perspective couples and guests to pending nuptials. It is a the time for "Love and Weddings." Thousands of people will swarm to Las Vegas in order to get married. Every chapel will be filled to capacity from literally dawn right up to the stroke of midnight. There are usually more weddings on Valentine's Day than on any other day of the year, but this year might be interesting...one day might actually eclipse the 14th this year, July 7th might be bigger because it's 777, and that's the luckiest number in Las Vegas.

"Tony 'n Tina's Wedding" at the Rio opened on Valentine's Day and is now getting ready to celebrate it's fifth-year anniversary.

The decision by the NBA to bring the All-Star Game to Las Vegas was a big coup for the city. All-Star week brings a weeklong celebration to town with all kinds of entertainment and shows throughout the city. It will bring a lot of money to our town; however, the biggest complaint about the game itself is the fact that the ticket prices are so high that no average person is going to have the opportunity to attend the game...the cheapest ticket will run you well over a thousand dollars, and good seats will be in the ten thousand dollar range.

The Mel Brooks comedy, "The Producers," will officially open at Paris Las Vegas on the 8th of the month. The show is currently in previews and locals can purchase tickets for just sixty dollars. The cast of the show is exceedingly talented and most of them have previously performed in the production in one of its other venues. The seasoned cast will join television legend David Hasselhoff. "The Producers" have won more Tony's than any other production in Broadway history. It will be interesting to see how it translates to the Vegas stage. The cut down version should be fast, furious and hilarious.

"X" is coming back to town. The sexy and steamy adult revue is returning to Vegas February 12th and will be performing at the Flamingo Cabaret Theatre with a beautiful and talented cast of International performers. When the show was at the Aladdin, it pushed the boundaries of what a revue could get away with. It had to tame down it's act when it moved to the V theatre, but it should be back in top (or should I say topless) form.

During late February and into March, "American Idol" finalist, Jasmine Trias will replace Lani Misalucha in the Society of Seven Show. Misalucha will be out selling her solo album.

The boys in plaid are, once again, heaven-sent to perform "'Forever Plaid'-The Heavenly Musical Hit!" in the Gold Coast Showroom for eight more weeks, beginning Feb 6th and running through April 1st 2007. "Forever Plaid" is a story about an endearing harmony group whose dreams of musical glory ended suddenly one fateful night en route to their professional debut in 1964. The group was slammed broadside by a school bus of Catholic teens on their way to see the Beatles make their television debut on the Ed Sullivan Show. There is something charming and unforgettable about these young men who see their dreams smashed, then spark to life again in the most unusual way.

One show has announced its closing...before it ever opened. The producers of "Defending the Caveman," originally set to open on February 10th at the Steve Wyrick Theater, have postponed their Las Vegas debut until further notice. The show has been seen in more than 30 countries and translated into 16 different languages. It is a hilariously insightful play about the ongoing misunderstandings between men and women. The multi-month delay of the opening of the Wyrick theatre was just too much for the producers. Refunds are available at the point of purchase.

And speaking of Steve Wyrick...the nightclub has opened, and it is said that Wyrick will begin performing this first weekend in February with ventriloquist Ronn Lucas opening soon after.

Kathy Griffin will perform at Mandalay Bay Theatre Friday, February 23. Griffin is a multi-faceted performer known for her role as Vickie Groener on the NBC sitcom "Suddenly Susan." In 1998, Griffin starred in her HBO one-hour special, "A Hot Cup of Talk." Griffin has appeared on numerous talk shows including "Late Night with David Letterman," "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno," "Howard Stern" and "The View" and has been featured in the films "It's Pat" and "Four Rooms" among others.
It is her recent passion for reality TV that has guided her career. She won "Celebrity Mole" on ABC, hosted the NBC reality series "Average Joe" and hosted the MTV series "Kathy's So-Called Reality." In August 2005, Griffin's reality show, "Kathy Griffin: My Life On The D-List," debuted on Bravo.
