The boss sent me to another charity event. This one was for ‘Innovations International Charter School of Nevada’, which was at the Annie Lee’s Art Gallery. You know I don’t get out much anymore, so I’ve never heard of either of them.

As your cub reporter for Las Vegas, I tried to get the scoop on the event, but I am not Matt Lauer. ‘The Social Diva’ herself, Maria L. Everson, greeted me. She handed me her business card, and said she could improve my social life with a great party for my friends and me. I told her I didn’t have many friends and could she supply my party with friends? She laughed and stayed away from me the rest of the night. |

I spoke to this woman and she asked the classic line, “What do you do?” I told her "I'm a Competitive Eater." She said, “I don’t believe you.” “OK, I am a Nuclear Submarine Captain.” This time I think she believed me. Lately, ‘The Mixer’ is a big deal. You’ll find them all over town, and I have been going to different ones since last year, mostly for the free food. The food is usually not that good and the drinks start at $10.00, but if you want to meet new people, it’s the only game in town. |

At these events, a business card is the most important weapon in your arsenal. No one will talk to you unless you give him or her a business card. It tells the other person you are serious, and you want to talk about buying or selling something. After a few minutes, the person sizes me up … I’m only interested in idle chatter. I can’t make them any money so there is no need to talk to me and they walk away. Well, I don’t care; I have a flat screen and I’m going home to watch TV. |
