With the onset of springtime upon us, March is
one of the best times of the year to come to Las
Vegas—it is beautiful. This is no secret,
though, a LOT of people grace our city with
their presence this time of year. There are
hundreds of conventions; students from all over
the country make Vegas their Spring Break
destination; most of the pools are gearing up
for a busy time, new shows are either just
opened or are on the brink of opening, NASCAR is
in town; the first ever Vegas Grand Prix is just
on the horizon, and everyone is running at a
full tilt right now. Springtime brings a sense
of renewal to the air. Since the beginning of
recorded history, there have always been
celebrations in the spring honoring that spirit
of rejuvenation. It is the end of winter. Spring
is about re-birth, life after death, and a fresh
start after a cold period in our lives. All of
these things that we naturally feel in ourselves
could easily characterize the nature of
entertainment in Las Vegas during March. This is
the time to get new things going. In Vegas, just
like in any other city in the country,
Spring-cleaning will occur, and we’ll have more
garage sales than at any other time of the year.
Preview performances for Monty Python's SPAMALOT, starring John O'Hurley from Dancing with the Stars and Seinfeld fame, begin March 8, 2007, in the Grail Theater at Wynn Las Vegas. The show is written by Eric Idle and is lovingly ripped off from the motion picture Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Monty Python's SPAMALOT features lyrics and a Grammy Award-winning score by Eric Idle and long-time Python collaborator John Du Prez. The show is directed by Oscar and Tony Award-winning legend Mike Nichols. With Monty Python's SPAMALOT, Eric Idle has created a deliriously funny live spectacle, which tells the legendary tale of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, and their quest for the Holy Grail. The show features lusty maidens, dancing divas, a killer rabbit and the only legless knight appearing on the Las Vegas Strip. Visit www.montypythonsspamalot.comfor further information. And…as Spamalot opens at the Wynn, Le Reve will be closing down for a while. Le Reve is getting a complete makeover, including a reduction in the number of seats in the auditorium (in order to make way for special VIP seats with underwater and backstage cameras.) Steve Wynn bought out control of the show from its creator Franco Dragone, and has been wanting to make some substantial changes. Closing down at this time should also help support and boost sales of Spamalot. (Just between you and me, I did find out that one of the changes will be the inclusion of a ballroom dance number.) Barry Manilow is celebrating the second anniversary of his hit show, Manilow: Music and Passion at the Las Vegas Hilton. “We congratulate Barry Manilow on a great year of success, not only at the Las Vegas Hilton, but award and his ‘Greatest Songs’ success on the charts,” saidÒin winning an Emmy Ken Ciancimino, Las Vegas Hilton executive vice president. “Barry’s phenomenal appeal and his staying power as our long-term headliner make him an enduring symbol in this erratic Las Vegas entertainment market.” Manilow opened Music and Passion at the resort on February 23, 2005. After long, long delays; Steve Wyrick and his nightclub Triq are now open for business. The delayed, but much anticipated entertainment venue is in the Desert Passage mall and features performances of Wyrick, ventriloquist Ronn Lucas, and singer Martin Navera. Beacher’s Madhouse will once again be at the Hard Rock at the end of the month. Joe Piscopo has brought his headline show to the Shimmer cabaret at the Las Vegas Hilton. Piscopo puts on a great show. It is classic Vegas entertainment that showcases the extremely talented and multi-faceted Piscapo in a night that is filled with singing, comedy and music. The band is headed up by legend Vincent Falcone. Prince is doing great business at the Rio, but there are already rumors that the artist will be leaving the venue at toward the end of the month. Mezmorized, a new hypnosis show has opened in the late night spot at the V theatre inside Desert Passage Mall. Marc Sevard heads this production that has the added bonus on including a couple of showgirls along with the hypnotic effects. Sporting events will bolster the economy in Vegas this month. The race weekend at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway on the 10th and 11th will feature all of the big names of NASCAR. The Speedway fully expects to again sell out at this year’s event. Over 140,000 fans will be on hand to watch the races—and big crowd always means big entertainment. The other big sports event is the March Madness tournament. Every sports book in town will be packed throughout the event. These events bring in a lot of people, and when the game is over, all these folks want something else great to watch. The Las Vegas Monorail is “celebrating” its three-year anniversary—that is if anything about it can be celebrated. This has become a gigantic white elephant for our town. It is a joke and a piece of crap that was badly designed, badly built, and badly operated. It will be a wonder if they ever gain enough confidence for anyone to actually want to ride it. There will be a St. Patrick’s Day parade in Downtown Las Vegas, and every Irish Pub in the city will put on some sort of celebration. Easter and the plethora of Spring Breaks always bring in a lot of people. On April 14th, comic Marty Allen and his wife, Karon Kate (Blackwell), will take over the showroom at the Gold Coast where Forever Plaid has been entertaining audiences for the past two years. Marty and Karon are cruise ship favorites, ranking No. 1 with passengers on the Royal Caribbean line and No. 2 on Holland America. Their two New Year's Eve performances in the Gold Coast ballroom were sellouts.
Tom Jones
will be strutting his stuff at the MGM Grand
from March 1st to the 14th.
With his blockbuster hits like “It's Not
Usual,” “I'll Never Fall In Love Again,” Christina Aguilera w/ special guests Pussycat Dolls are going to be at Mandalay Bay on March 3rd. Christina earned her first of four Grammy Awards in 2000 for Best New Artist, her subsequent trophies came in 2001 for "Lady Marmalade"), in 2003 for "Beautiful") and in 2007 for "Ain't No Other Man), winning a Grammy for each of her albums, while devoting the lion's share of her time to recording and touring, the 25-year-old is active in a range of philanthropy.
