NETWORKING IS ONE of the best ways to successfully get new business and keep your business afloat. Successful networking is a two-way street that can benefit both parties, you and the individual or business you are networking with; this is not a selfish endeavor. I believe in networking, meeting people and connecting people and their business, as you would puzzle pieces. I have been called a "social architect" given the ability to introduce, and make the most of social and business experiences; everyone should come away from a function with something to share; an idea, information or an appointment to obtain more information. In my opinion, networking is an art. I am going to share with you 10 Gold Keys for Effective Networking with Platinum Results.

4. The 3 P's (Be Prepared, Practice, Practice, Practice, Be Powerful)
Take the time to prepare and practice a self-introduction and one that includes your business. This introduction should not last longer than one minute. Each group of people you meet is different; the key is to know your audience.
During your conversation, highlight the uniqueness of your business and what you and your business do well. Try to limit your discussion to only the elements of your business that are most beneficial to those you are about to meet. Although most businesses are multi-faceted it is good practice to concentrate on one aspect therefore not confusing your listener.
The time you spend perfecting your self and business introduction will make a tremendous difference in the presentation and impression that is left.
Remember, "Luck is opportunity meeting preparation."
5. First Impressions
It is well known that you only have 20 seconds to make the first impression, good, bad or questionable. Upon meeting someone or entering a room you are immediately observed and your actions interpreted. An essential skill is the ability to present yourself with confidence and enthusiasm. How you look, how you sound, what you say and your ability to listen truly impact future business and referrals.
We only have one opportunity to make a powerful first impression. Perception of another only takes seconds but is more that half of the total first impression. This can be enhanced or possibly destroyed by your appearance or body language. Image is everything; our image reflects how we feel about ourselves and how we want to be perceived by others. At all times we must consider the occasion and dress appropriately and professionally. A few tips to remember are to be sensitive to cultural differences, smile, have good eye contact, shake hands firmly but be relaxed and natural.
How you sound is very important. Our voices illustrate our energy level, enthusiasm and personality. It is notably important to be cognizant of how others respond to your tone of voice, pitch, quality and articulation. Admittedly, some voice types are more pleasant than others.
Be energetic and enthusiastic when you speak about yourself and your business. Your words have the power to hold the attention of the listener. To contribute to a positive first impression, be interested and interesting. Use verbiage that is sincere, fresh and stimulating. Take the time to read, keep up with current events and add to your vocabulary.
Being a good listener takes effort and skills. Listening skills can be improved through effort and practice. A couple of things to remember is to be sensitive to the needs of others, not being impatient and interrupting when someone is speaking. Most of all maintain good eye contact and give your undivided attention.
By exercising poor listening skills one conveys a lack of interest, indifference or boredom. Being a good listener is an important part of building relationships, collaborating efforts and actually making a difference in another person's life.
