NETWORKING IS ONE of the best ways to successfully get new business and keep your business afloat. Successful networking is a two-way street that can benefit both parties, you and the individual or business you are networking with; this is not a selfish endeavor. I believe in networking, meeting people and connecting people and their business, as you would puzzle pieces. I have been called a "social architect" given the ability to introduce, and make the most of social and business experiences; everyone should come away from a function with something to share; an idea, information or an appointment to obtain more information. In my opinion, networking is an art. I am going to share with you 10 Gold Keys for Effective Networking with Platinum Results.

The ten Gold Keys are as follows:

  1. Set Goals
  2. Be organized
  3. Have the Right Tools
  4. The 3 P's (Be Prepared, Practice, Practice, Practice and Be Powerful)
  5. First Impressions
  6. Networking is a Lifestyle
  7. YOU are the Host
  8. Follow-Up
  9. Up Close and Personal
  10. "C W" (Connect With, Communicate With and Collaborate With)

6. Networking is a Life Style

I live by the philosophy of Networking being a life style. Windows of opportunity are open all the time; the challenge is recognizing the potential and taking advantage of each individual unique situation. Networking is magical; each person we establish a relationship with opens the doors to a new group of people with new ideas, referrals and resources. You, in turn do the same for each person you meet. We are all in a position to change each other's lives, so start opening doors and changing lives.

Membership in different clubs, non-profit groups and organizations provide an avenue for visibility and expanding your network. I personally believe in our communities, this will give the personal satisfaction of giving back as well as allow you to meet leaders in your field or industry. If actively pursued you can enhance your own leadership skills. Get involved in committees, become an officer, speak-up and let people know who you are and what you do. This is all a part of the effective networking formula.

Speaking and writing are both intricate parts of helping to set you apart from others with similar credentials, expertise and talents. Once set apart you begin to establish yourself as an expert in your field, which will in turn attract more business and referrals.

Share your expertise through speaking and writing. Many organizations look for speakers and short presentations on various topics for their scheduled meetings. You can also share your expertise through writing. Don't fret about being a professional writer to be published; there are many magazines and newsletters looking for a fresh perspective on various topics. Write articles, which provide new information or a new perspective on old information.

7. YOU are the HOST

Networking or "working the room" can be scary, cause feelings of anxiety and down right humiliating at times. The key is for you to act like a HOST not a guest. Simply act as if you are entertaining at home, that feeling of being hospitable will overcome all fears. The following keys will assist you in unlocking the doors to networking success.
  • During your travel to the event keep a positive attitude and review specific networking objectives in your mind.

  • Schedule your arrival to the event during the reception; this is the best time to "meet and greet" and practice your networking skills.

  • Upon arrival separate from your friends and colleagues…you already know them…meet new people.

  • Mingle and talk to people you do not know.

  • If you see someone standing or sitting alone, take time to talk to him or her. Perhaps you can make them feel more comfortable and your comfort level will rise as well.

  • Join in with groups of people that are talking.

  • Don't wait for people to approach you, initiate self-introduction. Get people to talk about themselves and their business by asking "open-ended" questions.

  • Remember that "script" you practiced, now is the time to use it. Introduce yourself and your business, exchange information and don't forget to give out your business cards…get their business cards as well.

  • Welcome others into your conversation group don't leave anyone on the "outside looking in."

  • Break the ice at your table by starting the introductions and passing your business cards around the table.

  • Move around the room, from conversation to conversation graciously. If possible put the puzzle pieces to together by introducing people of like interest to each other and excuse yourself after they begin talking.

  • Please remember NETWORKING time is not time to sell. If there are areas of mutual interest set a time to call and set an appointment to meet.

  • Make your conversations brief; give yourself and others the opportunity to meet more people.
The more you NETWORK, the more comfortable you will feel. You will find it not only exciting, but really, really easy.
