Then - Deadwood in the days of Wild Bill Hickok (no I didn’t deal to him) until the late 70s
Now - the 80s till… duh, now!
Today most players are too pretty, and I don’t mean the Cyndy Violettes’ and Jennifer Tillys’. In the early days of poker, the guys looked liked outlaws (or gangster, ala "the boys who ran the town in the 70s) and the ladies were generally over 50 and looked like your aunt Jane... and you always wondered if she was your Aunt Jane or really, your uncle John. The old-time guys mostly donned cowboy hats and now-a-days baseball caps are the headgear of choice.
Today players do not have to check their guns at the door, I doubt if any of them even carry guns… well the cowboys and the boys from Texas often packed heat.
Today you don’t have to part the smoke hovering over the table to see the player’s up cards at the other end of the table, today you have to leave the room to take a puff.
Today some of the WSOP dealers call deuces' & treys, twos and threes… PUKE! Where, in the 1972 WSOP dealer orientation, we were told that if we EVER called a duece & trey a two or three, we would find ourselves BOUNCED from our job! That was like breaking one of the sacred commandments of poker.
Today there is only one person I wouldn’t check-raise, and that is any player named “Jesus”. Back in the days though, one would think twice about putting a bad beat on players named The Mask, or Pug, Snake, Waterhole, Crazy Kid, Knuckles or Vise! Well, these characters were not from Damon Runyon, I dealt to all of them, and although I don’t look like it, I lived to write about it.
And finally….
Today you don’t have to win almost every pot (in small limit ring games) to “break even”, for all you ‘Newbies’ ask someone about “Snatch Games” or just check out this early column of mine.
As always... I'd rather be lucky than good... Frank Marino
BTW, this is a photo of Doyle Brunson from the 1976 WSOP, behind him is good friend Eric Drache and that's me with by back to the camera, hairdo look familiar?
