New exam rooms, lab space under construction to meet the growing patient volume and faculty recruitment

NEVADA CANCER INSTITUTE (NVCI) is currently under way with construction of new lab space at its flagship facility at One Breakthrough Way to accommodate the Institute's growing patient volume. Construction on new exam rooms will begin next week.

Since opening in September 2005, NVCI has seen 2,000 new patients in its medical and radiation oncology divisions. In less than two years, patient visits to NVCI, including diagnostic imaging, total 125,000.

The expansion will create five more patient exam rooms, for a total of 14, to help handle NVCI's increasing patient volume and new oncologists. The new configuration will improve patient flow and allow for a second nurses' station.

&"Patient volume has been increasing, and we have also successfully recruited new clinicians who will be able to serve more patients," said Phillip J. Manno, M.D., F.A.C.P., chief, Department of Clinical Oncology and Hematology Services. "With this new clinic modification, we hope to keep the patient waiting time to a minimum and continue to deliver the highest level of quality care possible."

Additionally, 5,000 square feet of new lab space is being constructed. When completed, this will add three new labs to NVCI bringing the total to 12.

Lab space is crucial to NVCI's goal of increasing its faculty to 80 by 2012 with an emphasis on clinical research, basic and population science. NVCI currently has 25 faculty members, which includes physicians and researchers. Lab space is also critical to advancing knowledge about cancer, finding better treatments, protocols and one day a cure.

"Lab space is a crucial component of the recruiting process," said Sandra Murdock, F.A.C.H.E., Dr.P.H., president and chief operating officer. "It enables NVCI to recruit the top physician-scientists and their teams. Having space for an entire team makes for an easy and quick move with minimal disruption of work."

Marnell Corrao is the contractor. Construction of the patient exam rooms and labs is expected to be complete this fall.

NVCI's 142,000-square-foot building opened September 23, 2005. The four-level building (one level is below ground) has two wings and is dedicated to patient care, research and education. The building, built by Marnell Corrao, was constructed to be a one-stop resource for cancer care and information. Housed in NVCI's flagship building is medical oncology, a radiation oncology suite, pathology lab, research laboratories, a 24-seat chemotherapy suite, complete and digital diagnostic imaging suite (MRI, PT-CAT scan, mammography, etc), an Information and Resource Center that is open to the public and has affiliate membership in the National Network of Libraries of Medicine, Illuminations Boutique, Sunflower Café with a patio/garden area, meditation room and a yoga room.
