A Word Overheard

The city of Las Vegas will be lighting up the night in celebration of the completion of a $5.5 million streetscaping effort for downtown’s new entertainment district, Fremont East. A Fremont East District lighting and dedication party will be held on Friday, August 24. The event kicks off with live music at 7 p.m. and includes a lighting ceremony at 7:45 p.m. These activities are scheduled at Fremont Street, between Las Vegas Boulevard and Seventh Street.
“This signals yet another successful achievement in the ongoing rebirth and urban renaissance of downtown Las Vegas,” Las Vegas Mayor Oscar B. Goodman said. “With the completion of this major project, Fremont East will be transformed into an exciting, thriving area that will offer entertainment options for residents and tourists alike.”

Located in the heart of downtown, the Fremont East District sits adjacent to the Fremont Street Experience, which was visited by 18.7 million people last year. The city is celebrating the completion of the $5.5 million streetscaping improvements, made possible through a public-private partnership by the city of Las Vegas and Fremont East property owners.

“This project is a partnership between the city of Las Vegas and those business owners who believe in the city’s desire to revitalize downtown,” said Ward 5 Councilman Ricki Y. Barlow, who represents this area. “The history of Las Vegas, with all its mystique and neon, will be showcased in this project and I encourage everyone to celebrate with us on August 24.”

Improvements include the creation of wider sidewalks and more pedestrian-friendly streets; landscaping; lighted gateways and four 40-foot-tall, retro-looking neon signs. Through this streetscaping effort, the city is capitalizing on popular nostalgia by reviving the old glamour of vintage Las Vegas. From Las Vegas Boulevard to Eighth Street, three blocks of Fremont Street experienced this transformation. Streetscaping improvements were begun in late January of this year and took seven months to complete.

"We're Not In Egypt Anymore, Ramesse"

This coming Labor Day weekend Las Vegas Nightlife will be all about choices. Stepping up to the plate and throwing Vegas a curve ball will be Luxor with a star powered weekend complimented by the grand openings of Noir Bar and LAX. Slick and cutting edge in design, the two venues could hardly be further apart in what they offer to the discriminating nightlife patron. Launched by a grand opening hosted by Brittney Spears on August 31, LAX will aim for a new level of status in the nightclub industry as celebrity investors Christina Aguilera and DJ AM team up with Pure Management Group.

“LAX is going to blow people away with its sheer beauty and design,” said Robert Frey, Managing Partner of Pure Management Group. “When guests come to LAX, they are going to be treated to a nightclub experience unlike any other”, he boasted. And like the LAX in Hollywood, this venue will cater to a young, sophisticated crowd and become the destination of choice for well-informed club-goers, A-list celebrities and the social jet set. With unrivaled décor featuring a top-tier sound system perfect for multiple music styles, the 26,000 square-foot, two-story space is sure to be one of the most talked about clubs in the world.  LAX will be outfitted in rich, red leathers and adorned with oversized mirrors and shimmering chandeliers, creating a modern and luxurious feel throughout.  “LAX will have that extra wow factor that other clubs are missing,” said Luxor President & COO Felix Rappaport.  “We are excited for our guests to experience this one-of-a-kind venue.”
