I MUST QUESTION myself: everyone around me is laughing and having a good time, why am I falling asleep? It happened to me the other night during The Blue Man Group at The Venetian Showroom. First, never put me in a dark room, I tend to fall asleep anyway. I almost fell asleep with
4000 people screaming and laughing people in The Orleans showroom during a performance of Larry, The Cable Guy. Of course, after 20 minutes of the same potty jokes, who wouldn't?
And, who the hell am I? The Venetian paid millions of dollars building The Blue Man Group showroom, putting together a talented cast and crew and I am reviewing their work and passing judgment?
What went wrong, all the stars should have been lined up, blue is my favorite color, and I was wearing a blue jacket. Maybe I'm too old, or just don't get it. The Blue Man Group is made up of three guys; all painted a shinny blue, head to toe. The show consists of them doing goofy things for an hour and a half.
The Showroom is great, brand-new, 1760-seat, built especially for this show, anywhere you sit you can see everything. But what do you see? The Blue Men catch paint balls in their mouth and then spit up the paint on a canvas. The audience couldn't get enough of it, so The Blue Men spit up chewed Captain Crunch Cereal all over the people in the front row. This caused everyone in the front row and the rest of the audience to go crazy with laughter. Earlier, as I entered the showroom, I saw crewmembers giving out raincoats to the people in the first couple of rows, now I know why. The Venetian calls them Poncho Seats, they cost more, but you get spit on. Well worth the extra cost.
More goofy stuff for another hour, and the entire time the audience was howling, screaming, and laughing with happiness. The big finale was tons of toilet paper pulled from rolls at the back of the showroom, mounding up and covering the entire audience. I must admit this was fun.
As I walked out of the showroom, I asked the people around me if they enjoyed the show? Maybe 20 or so people, not scientific, but everyone I asked enjoyed and loved the show. The "I's" have it and I don't. It's me, I'm crazy. Oh, hell, it's not me, everyone else is crazy, but blue is still my favorite color.
Now, YOU have a chance to see if I'm crazy, or it's the rest of the world. This is a real Daily Double; as you evaluate my judgment, you can help a good charity. The Blue Man Group is donating all proceeds from a special one-night performance at The Venetian to Opportunity Village.
The show will be on Sunday, September 30, 2007, for a special 5:00 p.m. performance. ALL proceeds will go toward bettering the lives of people in Las Vegas with special needs through Opportunity Village's services and programs.
