THE CITY OF Las Vegas will honor exceptional urban design through the second annual Mayor's Urban Design Awards (MUDA). Nominations for the awards, which will recognize projects that foster the city's commitment to sustainability and livability, are being accepted Oct. 1 through Nov. 16, 2007.

Nomination forms are available at the front counter at the Development Services Center located at 731 S. 4th St. or online at www.lasvegasnevada.gov/planning or MUDA_NominationForm_2007.pdf. Nominated projects must be within city limits and be constructed by Dec. 31, 2007, to qualify for the award.

The awards will recognize projects that cultivate walkways and streets that are shared public spaces, promote safety, conserve resources, seamlessly link to their surroundings and are pedestrian friendly. A category for historic preservation has been added to the three from last year, buildings and their environs, public places and public art.

The awards will be presented at the State of the City address at the Las Vegas Springs Preserve on January 8, 2008, by Mayor Oscar B. Goodman.

"For the second year, we will be recognizing some of the outstanding design work in our great city," said Mayor Goodman. "Last year's winners have helped transform Las Vegas into a place that is recognized for art and culture."

Public Places: Lewis Street Pedestrian Corridor
SWA Group

Public Art: El Jardin (East LV Community Senior Center)
Hank Saxe and Cynthia Patterson

A five-member volunteer committee has been formed to review and rank the submissions for recommendation to Mayor Goodman, who will select the award winners. The Planning and Development Department is providing staff support to the program and the volunteer committee.

The MUDA awards are commissioned art glass pieces designed for the second year by the local Domsky Glass Studio operated by artists Barbara and Larry Domsky. They have produced glass art for world renown clients including Wynn Las Vegas, Bellagio, Mandalay Bay, Nike and Giorgio Armani to name a few. These award art pieces were funded by the Las Vegas Arts Commission.
