THE NATIONAL CONFECTIONER’S Association has declared the month of October as National Chocolate month and October 28 as National Chocolate Day, so let’s celebrate one of America’s favorite foods.
The history of chocolate began with the tasty secret of the cacao tree, discovered 2,000 years ago in the tropical rainforests of South America. The pods of this tree contain seeds that can be processed into chocolate. The story of how chocolate grew from a local Mesoamerican beverage into a global sweet encompasses many cultures and continents.
The first people known to have made chocolate were the ancient cultures of Mexico and Central America. These people, including the Maya and Aztec, mixed ground cacao seeds with various seasonings to make a spicy, frothy drink.
Later, the Spanish conquistadors brought the seeds back home to Spain, where new recipes were created. Eventually the drink’s popularity spread throughout Europe. Christopher Columbus is credited with bringing chocolate to North America.
Since then, new technologies and innovations have changed the texture and taste of chocolate, but it still remains one of the world’s favorite flavors.
Fleur de Lys features their Chocolate Feast which contains a chocolate brownie, chocolate tart, chocolate port de crème, white and dark chocolate mousse, white chocolate, and vodka sorbet.
M&Ms, those little candy-coated milk drops, opened M&M's® World in Las Vegas 10 years ago with two other locations in Orlando Florida and New York, New York. With merchandising, different shell colors and unique branding, M&Ms are for the true chocolate lover.
Bertolini’s Authentic Trattoria is offering America’s favorite treat both as a dessert and a martini and these wonders are offered all year round. The Chocolate Martini is made from Dutch Chocolate Vodka, Godiva White Chocolate Liqueur and topped with Chocolate Syrup. Spectacular Chocolate Torta is a moist chocolate cake with lots of rich, creamy chocolate icing. Coppa Spumone is layers of pistachio, strawberry, vanilla and chocolate gelato with fully whipped cream.
At Trevi’s at the Forum Shops at Caesars, how about a Chocolate Brownie Gelato or another decadent, rich chocolate cake?
Ethel M Chocolates, which features factory tours and delectable goodies with real liqueur, opened Chocolate Lounges in both Chicago and Las Vegas. The Chocolate Lounge has cozy, overstuffed chairs, so one can sit and inhale the wafting aromas of warm-blended chocolates which include hot chocolates, coffees, teas, sparkling beverages, juices and water.
Chocolate is a vital part for an evening of relaxation and rejuvenation. Elite MedSpa and Intermix Women's Chocolate and Wine Tasting Event, an invitation-only private affair, is combining luxurious pampering with chocolate-covered fruit, wines, imported cheeses and appetizers. Elite MedSpa and Services is a high-end medical spa facility and Intermix is a luxury retailer with collections from Stella McCartney, Matthew Williamson and JBrand, just to name a few. The event, to be held at the exclusive Dragon Ridge Country Club, demonstrates the importance of chocolate in exclusive events.
Some fun facts about chocolate we all need to know. Did you know that chocolate has a reputation as a love potion? It is said that the Aztec Emperor Montezuma consumed 50 jars of chocolate brew every day for his nightly visit to his harem. Chocolate and love create similar sensations in the brain’s chemical reaction. Chocolate is good for us and helps reduce the risk of strokes and heart attacks. And it is discovered that people buy chocolate for the ones they love, so if you receive a box of chocolates, consider yourself blessed.
So here is to National Chocolate Month and the retail sales of chocolate that add up to 13 Billion dollars per year. I am going to do my part and make that 14 billion dollars next year.
