Statement of Hillary Clinton on
Culinary Workers Union Local 226
Agreement with Golden Nugget

“TODAY [October 18, 2007] MORE THAN 1,500 employees of one of Las Vegas’ legendary downtown properties can rest easier, thanks to the settlement agreement between the Culinary Union and the Golden Nugget. Over the years, many of these workers have remained with the property through ownership changes as well as an evolving physical landscape in the downtown area.

“Through their commitment to the collective bargaining process, Landry’s Restaurants, owners of the Golden Nugget, recognize that these workers, some of whom have long-term relationships with loyal customers, are an integral part of the hotel’s brand and hard-earned reputation. Both the Landry’s and Culinary negotiating teams should be congratulated for their efforts in bringing forward responsible contracts that protect wages, benefits and advancement opportunities. It is my hope that other negotiations in progress, from Las Vegas to Reno, will bring about equally successful results.”

Agreement with Boyd Gaming

“I WOULD LIKE to congratulate the negotiating teams from the Culinary Workers Union and Boyd Gaming for reaching a new contract agreement, alleviating worries about job security and benefits for workers at the company’s downtown Las Vegas properties. Their shared commitment to the collective bargaining process is admirable and will undoubtedly bring both the company and its front-line employees a more secure and prosperous future.

“As deadlines approach, I am hopeful this agreement will set a precedent for other downtown properties currently engaged in negotiations with the Culinary Union. Many of the men and women working in historic downtown Las Vegas are the people whose efforts made the community the entertainment capital of the world that it is today. Expedient settlements guaranteeing good wages, benefits and opportunities for advancement would honor their hard work and commitment.”
