Nevada Athletic Commission Executive Director Keith Kizer today announced that the Commission has hired Dr. Timothy Trainor as Consulting Research Physician. The position was approved last summer when the Advisory Committee on Boxer Health & Safety recognized an opportunity to even more stringently monitor the welfare of boxers and other unarmed combatants.
Prior to the hiring of Dr. Trainor, physicians volunteered their time to review medical tests and offer recommendations. Dr. Trainor now provides a dedicated resource to review all the medical documents of each fight in the state. He will order additional tests as appropriate, offer advice on medical issues that may arise from his review, and verify the authenticity of medical tests from other states and countries.
“We are very excited to have Dr. Trainor on board,” said Executive Director Kizer. “He brings top-notch training and experience to a role that goes beyond reviewing medical records.”
Dr. Trainor will also conduct scientific studies on equipment, such as gloves. “Boxing is one of the major sports in the world,” said Kizer. “Yet it rarely benefits from major studies. This is a great opportunity to obtain important scientific data that the entire industry can use.”
In addition, Dr. Trainor will develop educational materials on Training and Nutrition. “There are so many common but dangerous practices out there,” said Kizer. “Dr. Trainor will create ‘Quick Guides’ to help fighters and their managers understand the best way to handle injuries and the ramifications of dehydration and other conditions.” The guides will be created in English and Spanish and will be available free of charge on the Athletic Commission’s website.
Dr. Trainor is a local practicing Orthopedic Surgeon with Advanced Orthopedics and Sports Medicine. He completed his medical school degree at Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago, Illinois, and his orthopedic surgery residency training at Georgetown University Medical Center in Washington, D.C. Dr. Trainor recently completed five years of service in the United States Navy before relocating to Las Vegas for private practice.
