We are all looking for the same thing - to connect with our
soul in order to receive guidance and deep, meaningful messages. There are a lot
of Kabbalah books out there on the market these days that promise you this. Some
are good, others not so good. Most of them require a Ph. D in Kabbalah just to
understand them [figuratively speaking.]
Do you want to know a profoundly simple way to get
guidance from your soul, every day and every night? Here it is: ask yourself,
am I giving or taking right now?
When you take a deep breath in, you feel pressure in
your lungs that forces you to breathe out. But in life, we don't see how much we
are taking and how much that blocks our connection to our souls. You'd be amazed
how much clarity you can have by restricting your taking, and expanding your
giving.
Do it today. Ask yourself, over and over, am I taking
or giving? Am I taking or giving? Am I taking or giving? You'll get the hang of
it.
A student wrote to me this week, "for the last two months
I've been restricting in this one area of my life. But I'm still not seeing any
changes."
While restriction is a great start, the student is
forgetting to throw away the calculations. When we sit and wait for the result,
it will never come.
A student goes to his teacher and says, "Teacher, no
one loves me." The teacher says, "run away from love and love will run after
you." Easy enough. Two weeks later the student returns and says, "it's not
working. I'm running but it's not running after me." The teacher says, "you are
running, but you keep looking over your shoulder to see how far back it is."
Today, don't look back, don't look ahead. Just look at
the spiritual task in front of you. Submit to the process and let go of the need
for results. As my mother and teacher Karen Berg says, " don't chase love. If
you busy yourself with helping others, love will come, like a butterfly, and sit
lightly on your shoulder."

My father and teacher Rav Berg gave an incredible lecture
to the community here in Los Angeles last weekend. As always, many inspiring
things were said but one of the most inspiring comments was this:
"I had the merit of having a teacher that was fully
knowledgeable, fully understood, and lived the life of a Kabbalist. And lived
it! That is not easy. That is, in fact, one of the most difficult aspects of my
whole involvement with Kabbalah."
What he meant by lived the life of a Kabbalist,
as he explained later in the lecture, is the idea that at all times one must
follow the cardinal rule of "love thy neighbor as thyself."
I ask you today, whether you are a long-time student or
this is just the beginning of your journey, are you treating people the way you
wish to be treated? Are you extending the courtesy of allowing people to be
themselves without trying to change or fix them? Are you genuinely loving
people? This is a question we want to continually ask ourselves as we face our
friends, our colleagues, our family - and most importantly, those whom we find
difficult to tolerate. This is the test of a true kabbalist.
