Protecting Your Pet In The Summer

Most people think nothing of putting their dogs in the back of their pickup truck or car and hitting the road to the lake or just shopping. What many people don't realize is that the summer heat can be devastating to a pet. Many animals are left in the sun with no protection. The lack of shade in the back of a pickup truck can cause heat prostration for the animals, or cause the animal to abandon the vehicle in search of shade or water. Animals that are left inside a vehicle can be subjected to temperatures that can soar well over 180°. Enclosed areas during the summer months can become stifling and kill a pet in a matter of minutes.

Animal Control frequently sees situations where pet owners have attempted to provide better living conditions for their pet that have unforeseen consequences.  In some cases owners will leave their pet in the garage believing that having the pet out of direct sunlight will provide better protection for the pet.  Without providing a means of cooling the living area the temperature can quickly become unbearable.  Another consideration is for animals kept outdoors, the two most critical issues are sufficient water, and shelter.  When planning for the need for shelter from the sun many people don't take into account the movement of the sun throughout the day.

An area that may be shaded in the morning or afternoon can have full sunlight during the hottest part of the day.

Water is a resource your pet cannot live without.  Many well meaning people do not realize that their pets can overturn a water dish, or that the sun will heat the water to a point where the dog cannot drink it.  Pet owners have many products available that will automatically dispense water for their pet.  These products are generally effective provided that the devise is placed so as to be shaded throughout the day.  Dogs and cats do not have the ability to perspire or sweat; instead they have to respire or pant. When temperatures are high the animal can't cool down, and could die or suffer irreversible brain damage. So even though your pet enjoys being with you during the summer months think about the conditions and consequences. The animal will thank you for it.
