Nevada Cancer Institute (NVCI) launched the next phase of its awareness campaign – the Fight Here Network. The goal of this grassroots advocacy network is to increase cancer awareness in the community by connecting likeminded individuals fighting for a greater cause. The Fight Here Network gives Nevadans passionate about cancer issues a forum to have their voices heard.
The Fight Here Network can be accessed through the website www.FightHere.org. The FightHere.org campaign was launched earlier this year as part of a campaign that cancer can and is being fought – through research and the latest care – at Nevada Cancer Institute. "We really wanted to create a multi-tiered approach to our awareness campaign first, by raising awareness of cancer care resources available in Nevada and now, a call to action – getting people informed about the issues at hand so positive change can occur," said Heather Murren, Chairman of the Board. The Fight Here Network will allow members to send e-mails or letters to legislators, search and find detailed information about elected officials, track how legislators vote on issues important to the cancer community and receive Action Alerts! and Advocacy Updates. Cancer accounts for nearly one-quarter of all deaths in the United States. In Nevada, more than 11,300 people will die of cancer this year and another 4,690 people will be newly diagnosed. Nevada has the 3rd highest cancer mortality rate in the U.S. among women, according to the American Cancer Society. NVCI has recruited community members to join the network and help in the fight against cancer. New members are encouraged to join by going to www.FightHere.org and following the links to new user registration.
