"Buy a Christmas Tree Day" Christmas Tree History: Did a celebration around a Christmas tree on a bitter cold Christmas Eve at Trenton, New Jersey, turn the tide for Colonial forces in 1776? According to legend, Hessian mercenaries were so reminded of home by a candlelit evergreen tree that they abandoned their guardposts to eat, drink and be merry. Washington attached that night and defeated them. Some historians trace the lighted Christmas tree to Martin Luther. He attached lighted candles to a small evergreen tree, trying to simulate the reflections of the starlit heaven -- the heaven that looked down over Bethlehem on the first Christmas Eve. The Christmas tree is a symbol of a living Christmas spirit and brings into our lives a pleasant aroma of the forest.  Written by: David Robson Extension Educator, Horticulture Springfield Extension Center Learn more here

Festival of Lights

Each December, The Lakes Association sponsors the Lakes Festival of Lights… a major holiday celebration that brings together the residents of all the communities in The Lakes area near West Sahara.  This event really has it all… from food to fun to entertainment.  And it brings together our entire community for a beautiful occasion to kick off the holidays.  The Lakes Festival of Lights provides a great opportunity for us all to meet our neighbors, enjoy our community and just have a great time.  And of course, this event would not be complete without the grand finale... the Electric Light Boat Parade… a fantastic procession of beautifully lit boats reflecting off the waters of Lake Sahara.

The 2008 Lakes Festival of Lights will be held on Saturday, December 13 from 12 noon until 6 p.m.  The event is open to the public and admission is free of charge.
