Governor
Jim Gibbons issued the following statement in response to
questions regarding his role in the potential merger between
UnitedHealth and Sierra Health Services:
“It should come as no surprise that I am concerned about this
merger and its potential impact on healthcare in Nevada.
For six months, I have been expressing reservations and
raising questions about its impact on healthcare in our
state.
“That is why I called for additional hearings on this issue
and why I have sent numerous letters to the Department of
Justice highlighting potential problems.
“I believe that given the difficulties experienced in other
states--most recently in California-- we need to establish
safeguards for healthcare consumers and providers in the
event that the Department of Justice approves this merger.
Specifically, we need to look at creating a strong ombudsman
system within the State Insurance Division to serve as a
vehicle that all Nevadans can use to effectively resolve any
problems that arise. Additionally, I propose that during
the next Legislative Session we consider expanding our
current laws to enable the Insurance Commissioner to review
and debate every aspect of this type of merger.
“I am glad that other elected officials are taking an
interest in this issue and would welcome their input into
how we can work together in a bipartisan manner to ensure
that healthcare access and quality in Nevada does not
suffer.
“The implications of this merger are far-reaching, and I
want to ensure that we do everything possible to safeguard
Nevadans.”
