Everyone
knows the DJ is one of the most instrumental pieces to hip hop's puzzle. You
have mix DJ's, scratch DJ's, club DJ's , radio DJ's , Trick DJ's and DJ's that
can spin it all from Hip Hop to Reggaeton and Salsa. There are many DJ's in
Vegas that are used to playin for every culture of the world that visits Sin
City but there is only one Golden Child. DJ GC has been making noise in Vegas
for some time now and he's managed to create a big enough buzz to land him some
heavy sponsors and affiliate companies to co-sign for him. Today on the Hip Hop
corner we will take you into the professional life of DJ GC the "Golden Child".
DJ VUDU
SPELLZ: Hey wsup GC, my column is called the hip hop corner and in this column
we touch on what is going on in the hip hop
community in Las Vegas. I know you have been spinning for a while out here and
putting it down. I would like to let people know what you are doing out here and
how you hip hop is a part of your life.
I will start off by asking you to explain your DJ name "Golden Child" and how long you've been spinning in general and in Vegas.
GC: Throughout my career in this Industry, I can say I've proven to every crowd and every venue that Dj GC " The GoldenChild " can ENLIGHTEN a crowd through my music. The name GoldenChild was given by a friend of mine and thus held because one, the overall appearance and two, the wisdom of one who can ENLIGHTEN one's mind, body and soul. I first laid my hands on the decks in 89. From the Windy City to Sin City, I've been spinning here for about 5yrs now. And gonna continue with full force... nationwide!!
VUDU
SPELLZ: That's wsup. A lot of people may not know your ethnic background and how
important that people represent their culture in hip hop's diverse
movement. Let people know about that and what you feel your role in Vegas hip hop is.
GC: I am a full blooded "FLIP"....Filipino. The Hip Hop culture I feel revolves around self expression. Growing up as a minority actually benefited me in a way that I can actually express myself through music. The real life, the inner city life, mainly the street life opened up my eyes in a way that I can say, " I'm happy to be alive and have total freedom to express the good which evolved from the bad.
VUDU SPELLZ: Ok. I feel you. I wanted to touch on Salsero, at the South Point Casino, and how you mix your hip hop influences with the Salsa vibe. I also wanna know how do you think we can a create a unique cultural sound for Vegas that incorporates music like Salsa.
GC:
Coming from Chicago, I mainly hung around a part of Chicago called Humboldt
Park.
Mainly where a lot of Puerto Ricans lived. I mainly was influenced by this type
of music through my surroundings. The energy that salsa brings I'd say would
make anybody, no matter what ethnicity, to move or at least nod your head to the
beat. My selection of salsa music or any Latin music mainly is judged by how
energetic the beat is and the rhythm. Of how it flows. I love to mash up a lot
of music, just as long as they sound good together. To put together the sounds
of Latin house with any mainstream music definitely energizes any crowd. All I
can say is " You just gotta hear it. " The New Rhythm.....Neo Ritmo
VUDU
SPELLZ: Tell me more about the Trader Vics at Planet Hollywood and what you guys
are trying to do up there. I also wanna know wsup with the Elite Wednesdays at
Revolution in the Mirage. It was a nice vibe up there and I want people to
know what
you are gonna bring to the table when you spin in February. Tell the people wsup
with that.
GC: Trader Vic's was HOTT!!! The minute that The Mayan Kings and I threw down, EVERY head on the Las Vegas strip turned a wanted to check out what this was. We wanted to get together to put on a show...." Where turntablism and Percussion can Collide" to produce this uplifting sound that people from every ethnic and every age could jam to. It was an amazing day. On another note at Revolution, i'm just gonna play my style. Still gonna read the crowd but gonna do my thang. Allot of energetic, hype sounds with command and crowd participation vocals. I promise, it's gonna be HOTT and a night that you won't wanna miss. Come check it out... let me ENLIGHTEN you.
VUDU SPELLZ: I definitely can dig that. One last thing. There are a lot of new clubs and casinos opening up out here. How do you feel hip hop plays a part in these new establishments and do you feel DJ's are getting enough shine, creative control, and opportunities to work in these clubs or do you think it's too corporate.
GC: I
don't think that allot of the clubs out here know what kind of talent there is
out here. Allot of unknown Dj's I would say could definitely throw down way
better than

some of these shady Dj's at the clubs in Vegas. Hip Hop is loved internationally and plays an important role in the clubs here in Vegas. I feel a lot of these clubs mainly choose their Dj just because of who they know and where their from and even what they have. A TRUE DJ has a lot more to offer than just all these materialistic judgments. WE OFFER THE TRUE LOVE OF MUSIC. HIP HOP.......ONE
VUDU SPELLZ: Definitely. That wraps things up. I appreciate you taking time out for me to interview you. Keep grinding and much love to your family. Looking forward to us doing more great things in the future and Deftal making more moves in 2008 and beyond.
