Susan Brooks: Helping Kids and Business

There are many unsung heroes in our community, but few stand out like Sue Brooks. Sue is the founder of Helping Kids Inc., a non-profit medical clinic providing FREE healthcare for children from birth to 18 years of age. It is not unusual to find Sue and her team fighting the war against disease at Chamber events like La Oportunidad Expo or any other venue for that matter. They set up shop wherever they can to ensure that they immunize as many children as possible. What you might ask does this have to do with business?

Nevada’s immunization rate is 63%, unfortunately this number ranks Nevada 47th in the nation when it comes to children being immunized. What does this mean to the business owner? It translates into employees spending more time away from work tending to sick children; it also translates into higher health care costs related to acute illnesses contracted by employees and/or their children. Unfortunately, these numbers affect the poor minority population in Southern Nevada, primarily Latino. I have attached Sue’s bio below. I am sure that you will agree that people like Sue are few and far between, and are deserving of recognition. Sue the Las Vegas Latin Chamber of Commerce salutes you, as does the entire Latino community.

Sue Brooks, a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner, Sue went to undergrad school at the University of Kentucky and graduated with a BSN in 1975, she received a MS in Healthcare Administration from the University of St Francis (Joliet) in 1989 and a MS in Nursing as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner in 1996 from Syracuse University. Her thesis project from Syracuse was the Clinic On Wheels bus in Las Vegas where she worked for 10 years. In August of 2006 the staff of the Clinic On Wheels regrouped and separated to form the Helping Kids: Health Access Without Walls also known as the Helping Kids Clinic. She continues to be the CEO and an APN for the Helping Kids Clinic.
