This year the Summer
Solstice is June 20 – 21. Sol + stice derive from a combination of Latin
words meaning "sun" + "to stand still." As the days lengthen, the sun rises
higher and higher until it seems to stand still in the sky. As a major
celestial event, the Summer Solstice results in the longest day and the
shortest night of the year. The Northern Hemisphere celebrates in June, but
the people on the Southern half of the earth have their longest summer day
in December. Perhaps the most enduring modern ties with Summer
Solstice were the Druids' celebration of the day as the "wedding of Heaven
and Earth", resulting in the present day belief of a "lucky" wedding in
June. |

forces, once again, to bring
another blood drive to the
Tropicana Hotel and Casino on
Sunday, June 29, 2007 from 10:00
a.m. to 5:00 p.m. All donors
will receive one free ticket to
BODIES…The Exhibition and
Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition
as well as a choice of one
ticket to Folies Bergere or
Xtreme Magic starring Dirk
Arthur. Complimentary
refreshments will be provided by
the Tropicana Hotel & Casino to
all blood drive participants. |
