Gift will further NVCI’s mission of reducing the burden of cancer for all Nevadans
Sierra Pacific Resources, the parent company of Nevada Power Company and Sierra Pacific Power Company, presented a check for $1 million to Nevada Cancer Institute (NVCI) in order to continue providing exemplary research, treatment and education for their customers in both southern and northern Nevada.
This leadership gift will contribute toward reducing the burden of cancer and providing hope to the communities of Nevada and beyond.

Michael Yackira, president and chief executive officer, Sierra Pacific Resources said this is an important gift not just for NVCI, but also to the community at large.
“We are a partner in the community, and we understand that many of our customers are in the position of needing the world-class care available at Nevada Cancer Institute,” Yackira said. “We hope by showing our support for NVCI, other companies will follow our lead in supporting such a great resource in our own back yard.”
Shelley Gitomer, NVCI vice president for Development, said the leadership displayed by Sierra Pacific Resources gift is exemplary.
“Sierra Pacific Resources’ commitment to improving the lives of Nevadans is truly amazing,” Gitomer said. “With generous gifts, like the one given by Sierra Pacific Resources, we are able to continue pursuing our mission of preventing and curing cancer.”
Nicholas Vogelzang, M.D., NVCI director, said “This gift will allow us to continue doing what we do best – caring for our neighbors with the highest quality care available and to continue to build on what we have begun – a premier clinical and research cancer center.”
With the Sierra Pacific Resources gift, NVCI now has more than 55 founders. More than $180 million has been raised from private philanthropy to support the mission of NVCI.
