Auto burglary is a widespread problem.. Understanding what the burglars look for can keep you from being their next victim.
- Any car can be a target, any car can be burglarized.
- Auto burglary can happen anywhere. Some special danger areas include shopping plazas and parking lots.
- Most criminals don’t need to break in. They usually gain entry through unlocked doors.
Here are some basic Crime Prevention tips to assist you in your fight against auto burglary:
- Lock your car doors and shut your windows tightly every time you leave your car. Even a tiny gap allows a thief to insert a wire to pry up the lock button.
- Don’t hide a spare key anywhere in the vehicle. Thieves know all the hiding spots.
- Don’t leave anything in sight. Hide all valuables and personal property, or take it with you. Put packages in your trunk before you reach your destination.
- Never leave purses or wallets in the vehicle.
- Park in a well-lit area where there are plenty of people around (near busy stores, restaurants, etc.).
- Don’t advertise your home address by leaving packages, letters, etc., with your name and address visible in the car. It’s an invitation to home burglary.
Anti-theft devices such as an alarm can deter or delay burglars. The more time-consuming and obvious an auto burglary is, the more likely the burglar will become discouraged or get caught.
- Protect your valuables, carry as few as possible, especially if you must leave your car unattended for long periods.
- Don’t use the glove compartment as a “traveling safe.” It’s the first place thieves look.
- If you must park in a high-crime area, take everything out of the glove compartment and leave it open.
- Put special locks on accessories such as car stereos, video systems, etc., or lock them in the trunk when not in use. Engrave your name or other personal number on these items for added protection.
