CSI KEEPS BLURRING THE LINE BETWEEN FICTION AND REALITY

Another day, another debauched celebrity entangled in a drug scandal. Gary Dourdan, star of hit TV series CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, was arrested on Monday in Palm Springs for allegedly possessing a cocktail of prescription and illegal drugs. It's claimed Dourdan was carrying heroin, cocaine and ecstasy. The soon-to-be former CSI actor, 41, was reportedly found fast asleep in his car at 5.12am, celebrity news website TMZ claims. The fuzz in Palm Springs says Dourdan was busted after an officer approached his car, which was parked on the wrong side of the road at the time. A search of the car unearthed a stash of drugs, including several as yet unidentified prescription drugs, and drug paraphernalia, police say. TMZ reports that as the police officer approached the actor's car, he spotted that his interior light was on, and Dourdan appeared to be asleep behind the wheel. The arresting officer described Dourdan as "disorientated" and appeared to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol. The actor was whisked off to jail and incarcerated until the following morning. He's now out on $5,000 bail. Dourdan announced last month that he was planning to bail form his role as pill-popping Warrick Brown in the sleuthing show.

“PAULY SHORE’S AMERICA”

Comedian Pauly Shore joins the ever-growing roster of talent on Ripe Digital’s lifestyle and entertainment network Ripe TV (www.ripetv.com) with today’s preview of his new series, “Pauly Shore’s America.” The five to seven minute episodes will feature Shore casing America in Michael Moore fashion with a unique and unpredictable Pauly Shore twist. Reporting in a way only he can, Shore hits the streets to represent the viewpoint of Ripe TV’s audience as he explores everyone from the oddball to the average Joe or Jane, the outlaws to the toe-the-liners, the glitterati and the gutter-bound. In the premiere episode, Pauly Shore…In Search of the Polygamist, Shore makes his way to the Yearning for Zion Ranch in San Angelo, Texas to confront hypocrisies in his own manner and ask his own questions in the middle of the news media frenzy. For his next excursion, Shore is sniffing out the Wesley Snipes trial. “I wanted to produce an entertaining series that would allow me to explore subjects I found interesting in my own way,” said Shore. “When Ripe came to me with the idea of doing a new comedy series, I was immediately interested in working with them to create something that would break the mold of the traditional ‘news’ show.” “Our goal for all of our networks is to create the best original content that translates across multiple platforms and stands out in today’s crowded video marketplace,” stated Ryan Magnussen, CEO and founder of Ripe Digital. “Pauly’s hilarious fish-out-of-water sense of humor makes for great short-form television and resonates well with our audiences.” A preview of “Pauly Shore’s America” launched today on Ripe TV’s website. The full series will be airing online and on cable On Demand (via Time Warner and Comcast) in the coming weeks.

What a Wicked Web We Weave!

Sin City Brewing Company is a relatively-new and not surprisingly a successful locally-based small batch microbrewery. Despite it being around for only a few years, you can get the company’s beer on tap at many bars within resorts throughout Las Vegas. The company sells its Weisse, Light, Amber and Stout beers to the high-profile MGM, Mirage, Monte Carlo, Treasure Island, Excalibur, and New York, New York.  I see a pattern here! The company -- which falls under the licensing umbrella of JDK Select Inc. -- also provides beer to assorted outlets like Dicks Last Resort, Harley Davidson Cafe, and Lucky Strike. Fans are reported to say it’s both tasty and incredibly refreshing.

But when you take a long deep pull of any of these beers, don’t be surprised if the subtle aftertaste of coerced persuasion registers strongly on your taste buds. Simply put, without a certain MGM/Mirage upper level executive’s muscle, Sin City Brewing Company would have had many more hoops to jump through to have catapulted from a startup to a $2 million-a-year company inside of a few years.  Most new beer, wine and spirits companies can't even get a meeting or a tasting with the beverage buyers for properties like these.  Others pay huge sums of monies for placements in casinos and to be placed on their menus. The company, you see, was launched by long-time Gordon Biersch Director of Brewing Operations Richard Johnson, who is married to MGM Mirage Corporation Vice President of Public Relations Jenn Michaels.  Michaels seems to be taking the term “conflict of interest” to a whole new level by even allowing her spouse – to whom she has a financial connection – to do business as an MGM vendor, which is strictly prohibited in the MGM code of ethics since Michaels is an MGM corporate executive.

Johnson’s beer seems to be EVERYWHERE on MGM properties, while other local microbrewers are nowhere to be found. This begs the question: Is the secret to selling beer in Las Vegas as simple as marrying a MGM executive?

But wait. There's more…

In the course of her job Michaels employs the firm Kirvin Doak Communications to do a lot of extra public relations work. Kirvin Doaks' top executives such as David Kirvin and William Doak are therefore vendors under the MGM code of ethics.  And according to the Nevada Secretary of State’s Office the two are also partners of Michaels’ husband in JDK Select Inc., That's right!  Her office hires the partners of her husband.  Kirvin Doak management is so cavalier about their tight relationship with MGM that they prominently lists MGM as a regular client on their corporate website. We asked an ex-MGM executive for an explanation of how such a grievous conflict of interest could have occurred, that official was shocked to find out that there was a relation like this.

Our main question here is, DO THE MGM HIGHER-UPS KNOW ABOUT THIS AND IF SO WHY AREN'T THEY DOING SOMETHING ABOUT THIS CONFLICT OF

INTEREST? Why isn’t the MGM compliance department looking into this? How is it even possible that they aren’t? And do Johnson's competitors -- you know, the other microbrewers who may have wanted to put in bids to be sold on MGM property -- know about it?

Please don’t do yourselves the disservice of chalking this up to "that's just the way they do it in Vegas." What if you were one of Johnson's competitors? Wouldn't YOU want a fair shake? According to the MGM code of conduct, employees must not have any financial relationships with vendors, purchasers or competitors, either directly or indirectly. Johnson is a really great guy and may make the best beer in the world, but the unfair advantages involved here cheat others out of a fair chance.

This leaves us with a really bad taste in our mouth.

Update:

Seems that many of your comments are  addressing personal issues or lack of advertising issues with us regarding Sin City Beer.  To set the record straight, that is not the case.  I happen to be very fond of Richard Johnson on a personal level.  It's time corporations such as MGM/Mirage make uniform decisions, not steered by personal influences.  They are corporate officers, thus decisions that are made have the responsibility to be apples to apples, period. MGM is a corporation and not a family owned business with decisions being made for reasons that would benefit the “family” and not the stock holders! That is the problem. There are plenty of other vendors that would love this special treatment and priority placement. Why shouldn't all these vendors be given the same opportunities? Other vendors should come to the table at this point and share their stories with our readers.
