North Las Vegas Neighborhood Reinvents Itself
Residents in the urban core of North Las Vegas are celebrating their new image, reclaiming their identity as the North Valley Community and shedding their old gang-affiliated moniker of “40-Block.”
North Valley Community residents, City officials and area business leaders will hold a naming ceremony for the area from 10 a.m. to noon on May 10, at the Community Resource Center Courtyard, 2420 N. Martin Luther King Boulevard. The festivities will include live music, Native American dancing, poetry readings, singing and food.
For the past several years, residents of the area – roughly bound by Cartier Street to the north, Martin Luther King Boulevard and Comstock Street to the east, Lake Mead Boulevard to the south and Simmons Street to the west – have worked closely with City officials, police and each other to stamp out gang activity, eliminate blight and restore their community’s safety and beauty. The area is home to about 3,300 residents.
“I’ve seen an amazing change in attitude around here,” said Letha Whalum, a 43-year resident of the area. “Everybody’s more careful about keeping up their yard and their house. The streets are cleaner and the City code enforcement guys have kept the graffiti off my block wall. We still have a lot of school kids around here, but we don’t see the gangs at all.”
Police attribute that change in attitude to the willingness of residents to become partners in crime prevention and in promptly reporting problems.
"Crime prevention begins at the grass roots, neighborhood level," said Police Chief Joseph Forti. "I applaud these neighbors for getting involved and working closely with the City to improve their quality of life. They are an example for others to follow. I believe this collaborative effort will result in a safer and more beautiful area."
Despite the reduction in crime and stepped up beautification efforts, City officials still see a need for improvement and hope to bring more retail and commercial services to the area through a variety of collaborative efforts.
“This program provides residents with the tools and resources they need to take back and improve their neighborhood making it a better place to live,” said Senior Executive to the City Manager Kenny Young. “This is what progressive cities are doing and the City of North Las Vegas is pleased to implement this program within our community.”
