Nevada Delegation Announces National Guard Lands Bill

Legislation designed to help the Nevada National Guard expand its facilities was signed into law by the President.  Senators John Ensign and Harry Reid and Representatives Jon Porter, Shelly Berkley, and Dean Heller released the following statements.

“The men and women of the Nevada National Guard have played an integral role in the protection of our country since the attacks on September 11,” said Ensign.  “This legislation recognizes their commitment to our country and the commitment we have to ensuring they have all the resources needed to continue serving our state and country in times of need.  The Las Vegas Readiness Center will enable our National Guard to prepare, both physically and technically, should they be called upon for action.”

“Our Nevada National Guard stands up for our safety in our most vulnerable times. It is both our obligation to provide for these brave men and women everything they need to perform their service. I am proud to have helped pass this legislation and take care of not only our Guard, but all Nevada families who benefit from their work,” said Reid.

“I applaud the delegation’s hard work to ensure the Nevada Army National Guardsmen have access to the facilities, technology and equipment needed to guarantee proper training and readiness. It is Congress’ duty to provide the finest resources for our guardsmen so they may continue to deliver for Nevada and our nation,” said Porter.

“Whether in times of peace or conflict, Nevada’s National Guard stands ready to answer the call and it is our duty to honor this dedication by ensuring these brave men and women have the tools - including the facilities and training - needed to get the job done safely,” said Berkley

“The expansion of National Guard Readiness Center not only enhances the ability of the Guard to provide vital services to the State of Nevada, but our country as well.  With 85% of the land in Nevada federally controlled, getting federal land released for other uses is critical.  This expansion will provide the Nevada National Guard the resources necessary to train and prepare our guardsmen when they are called to duty,” said Heller.

This legislation allows Clark County to convey 51 acres of land to the Nevada National Guard for the Southern Nevada Readiness Center Act, which would allow the Guard to expand its facilities to construct vehicle maintenance facilities and emergency response support to First Responders in weapons of mass destruction situations. This land will also be used to provide a site for the future Civil Support Team Ready Building.
