The Vortex
I moved into my new (to me) house 18 months ago. I considered it a great investment because it was priced far below the market value. Well, guess what. Today, I'm losing money on it, but, as my Mama would say, "Life is a state of change", and "This too shall pass." This house, which has become my favorite home in all of my life, has several things I have never had in a home before. In particular, there are five recessed areas in the walls, throughout the house, in focal areas, with spotlights over them. They are different shapes and sizes. I had no problem with most of them. A vase here, a trophy there, a small statue yonder, but I had one focal point recess, going up the front stairs that is 10" high by 2" wide. Now I ask you, what the hell do you put in such an area? I simply could not find any eight foot vases.
At first I thought of a hand painting of cards, as if they were floating ... and then I got a price forget that for now. And then I had an idea that I really liked. A wind chime affect with cards. From hanging the whole ten fee to different lengths. Sassy found giant cards and I had some giant chips. Next challenge was how to get up there and from a flight of stairs, no less. Dereck! Dereck Haskell is a friend and my handyman. If I can't do something or figure out how to do it, or need something done that is real high, real heavy, or real gross, I call Dereck. We laid out the idea on the poker table. He went to work with double sided stick tape, a big ladder, six small hooks, a hole punch, and fishing line. A couple of hours later, I had a one-of-a-kind masterpiece! We named it the "Vortex" and it is awesome. The cards move ever so slightly when the heat or air comes on. It is gentle as it moves but ever so impressive. All at a cost of about $12 and Dereck's time. Dereck was so proud of it that he signed it!
