ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZee Best!!!!
Zandra Rhodes Teams
With Strutt Couture
For Designer Footwear 2010

AS THE FALL/WINTER season settles in with our usual break from the sandals and heat of the summer, we are switching our footwear to adjust to the time of the year. In the manufacturing and designing end of this industry, Fall 2009 is already old hat and the designs for the Spring 2010 have been released and will soon be coming into display at our favorite shoe salons and merchants. What will 2010 hold in store for the consumer and fashionable female?

Recently, we had the unique opportunity to interview the iconic, legendary, charismatic and visionary Zandra Rhodes, the British designer known for the past forty years as a driving force from London. She was amongst the original designers who put London on the map in the late 1960s as the Mod generation took over the stodgy looks that were a staple of post-World War II London. Her palette was shocking and sensational. She envisioned the world through rainbow slashes of color and unique designs to create wearable art.

In 1969, she opened her own shop in London to great success. Originally, her textile designs were deemed to be far too eccentric and outrageous to be acceptable by the manufacturers. However, she then became one of the helm leaders of the London fashion scene with her theatrical, creative and bold statements that lent an air of smooth, feminine boldness to her designs. She started the exposed seams look and added bejeweled pins during the 1970s punk era.

As her design images became her fashion stamp, she created unique ensembles for the late Princess of Wales, Princess Diana, and to this day her artfully crafted fashions for the rich, famous and loyally individual conscious women of the world. Prince Phillip of the United Kingdom bestowed the honor of Royal Designer for Industry in the UK and then Zandra Rhodes received the much-revered title of CBE (Commander of the British Empire) by Queen Elizabeth in 1977. In addition, Ms. Rhodes is the holder of six honorary doctoral degrees.

Her theatrical identity took hold in recent years, as she became a designer for the opera. Her natural larger than life designs went into her current costumes for the opera—including the San Diego Opera’s rendition of The Magic Flute in 2001. Currently, she has added Aida to her theatrical wardrobe creations. The transition into opera was a natural one for Zandra Rhodes—her colors reflecting the exaggerated costumes used on stage in all their glory. When asked about her latest designs, she revealed that “opera was her favorite form of music” and this is evident now that she has become an opera costume creator par excellence.

In May 2003, she opened the Zandra Rhodes Fashion and Textile Museum in London. Her off the rack couturier clothing is available in the states at Barneys. She still can be commissioned to create unique designs and has now divided her time amongst London, California and New York.

Now, in 2009, Zandra took some of her best signature looks to the feet! A dress does not stop at the hem and a full look should include the footwear that governs the frame of the style. Ian O’Connor, president of Strutt Couture—a trend-setting British brand shoe brand—teamed up with Zandra for their Spring 2010 collection. The result is astounding and sensational. Strutt Couture was already an established label with a fan base that included Kate Moss, Sienna Miller and Gwen Stefani, amongst myriad others, when the collaboration was incepted by O’Connor and Rhodes.

As we approached the booth for our interview with Ms. Rhodes, the female half of our team became absolutely mesmerized by Zandra. Ms. Rhodes’ bright fuchsia hair, crystal studded black round glasses and warm and gracious nature was a key in making this a very smooth and enlightening interview/profile session. Her warmth just gives further credence to her colorful and innovative work and designs. Her newest footwear for Strutt Couture includes booties on platforms, open-toed, and incorporating some of Zandra’s famous touches—angled, open slits backed with gold, all dramatic, unique and wearable! The shoes will be made in Brazil, famous for its fine leathers and workmanship. This will keep prices in the $200.00 range, instead of so many pricier designers who run up to $1,500.00 for a pair of their latest additions to the world of shoes.

Zandra Rhodes is a consummate designer who has crossed the lines of fashion worlds—textiles, clothing, shoes and costumes—and is a delightful and daring trendsetter who has already left an imprint on the world of style throughout the years. Now, Zandra is stepping out some more—Zandra is ‘Strutt’ing her latest with Strutt Couture for 2010. Slip into a Zandra Rhodes Strutt Couture collection pair—you will feel the palette burst beneath your feet as you fashionably walk down your own red carpet.

Zandra—you are the UNIQUE FASHION ICON of our times!!!!!
