The “Positive ROI 5” that is...
DURING THE 2007–2008 college hoops season this crack(ed) procrastinator wrote a weekly series called “The Positive ROI 5.” Each week, a predetermined and constant 5 teams from Div 1 were selected that were guaranteed to show a “positive return on investment” (ROI) by seasons end. I exercised the option to replace a team(s) (which I did 3 or 4 times) when they were, or about to, run bad. That year, going into the conference finals and March Madness we stood at 97-36 73%, straight up (SU) and against the spread (ATS) 72-43 62% (THAT WILL GET THE $$$$$).
This season, after giving the 150 or so teams in Division I 3 or 4 games to shake out the cob webs and settle on a starting 5 and finish their “cup cake games” and the early season tournaments (more, still to come, of course) I’ll start out with these 5, Minnesota Golden Gophers, Cornell Big Red (yes, they have athletics in the Ivy League too!), California Golden Bears, Tennessee Volunteers and The Siena Saints (who?).
The Tubby Smith coached Gophers are led by a couple of “DJs”—forward Damian Johnson and guard Devoe Joseph. Minn. at press time, last night, was taking on our “Little Team That Could” of
'07-'08 (although the Bulldogs play a lot taller then they did for the entire Pos 5 season in
'07-'08).The Big Red, with Derek Kellogg at the helm, have all five returning starters from their '08-'09 Ivy League championship team.
Mike Montgomery’s Bears, without their star forward Theo Robertson (foot injury) while losing two in a row (to ranked teams), should be a force to be reckoned with (I reckon...).

Coach Bruce Pearl can count on one of the highest scoring teams in the country last year (with most starters returning) to carry the Vols to another appearance at The Big Dance...
As of press time, this years edition of The Pos 5 are 15-6 SU and 11-7 ATS, a fair start, at least.
Remember these selections are for entertainment only, but if you know someone that takes pleasure in trying to beat his favorite book, tell him or her to start out with two unit wagers (unless otherwise noted) for the first couple of weeks.
See you next week. Until then “may we have nothing but net...”
