Henderson Bird Viewing Preserve Offering
Free Tours on the Bird Mobile

December 1, 2009 – HENDERSON, Nev. – The Henderson Bird Viewing Preserve, 2400 B Moser Dr., is hosting guided tours on the Bird Mobile from 10:30–11:30 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 17. Participation is free (ages 6 and up). Register online at cityofhenderson.com (activity 194027-99) or at any City of Henderson recreation center.

The Bird Mobile is an electric vehicle that seats six people and is a convenient and enjoyable way to tour the Henderson Bird Viewing Preserve. It is recommended for visitors who find walking difficult. Each child or teen (ages 6–17) must be accompanied by a registered adult. Seats are limited, so early registration is recommended. The tour may be canceled due to inclement weather.

The preserve is home to hundreds of migratory waterfowl, resident desert birds, and a variety of desert wildlife. Depending on the season, a wide range of unique birds can be seen. In late November, visitors identified the red-necked grebe, a migratory water bird that gets its name from its colorful neck, which turns red during breeding season. During winter, the grebe’s neck is gray. Prior to this sighting, the red-necked grebe had not been seen at the Henderson Bird Viewing Preserve since November 2004.

For additional information, visit cityofhenderson.com or call the Henderson Bird Viewing Preserve at 267-4180. The Bird Viewing Preserve hosts Bird Mobile tours throughout the year, as well as a variety of free workshops for children, teens and adults. The preserve is open from 7:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. during the winter months (December, January and February).

City of Henderson Christmas Tree Recycling Program
Open Dec. 26 Through Jan. 14
Sustainability Effort Benefits Environment

November 30, 2009 – HENDERSON, Nev. – The City of Henderson Parks and Recreation Department will accept Christmas trees for its holiday tree recycling program Dec. 26 through Jan. 14. Residents may drop trees off at any of six locations throughout Henderson: Acacia Park, 50 Casa Del Fuego St.; Anthem Hills Park, 2256 N. Reunion Dr.; Mission Hills Park, 551 E. Mission Dr.; Morrell Park, 500 Harris St.; Pecos Legacy Park, 150 Pecos Rd.; and Whitney Ranch Recreation Center 1575 Galleria Dr. Participation is free.

The Parks and Recreation Department recycles trees by putting them through a chipper and turning them into mulch. The mulch is used in city parks and in landscaping at municipal buildings throughout Henderson, saving money and reducing the volume of waste sent to landfills. Last year 1,734 trees were recycled through the program.

“Of all the real Christmas trees sold each year, only about 7 percent are recycled,” said Doug Guild, Park Operations manager, City of Henderson Parks and Recreation Department. “But recycling is a critical component of sustainability that anyone can do. It’s giving your holiday tree a new lease on life for the benefit of our environment and our community.”

Before dropping trees off for recycling, residents should remove all non-organic material, such as lights, wires, tinsel, nails and ornaments. These items can damage the chipper and contaminate the mulch, rendering it unusable. Flocked trees cannot be recycled.
