Winter/Spring Classes Starts Jan. 4 and Jan. 6
December 23, 2009 – Henderson, NV – Registration for the City of Henderson Parks and Recreation Department’s 2010 winter/spring classes, workshops, and events will be accepted starting at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 6. Enrollment for all aquatic classes, swimming lessons and youth enrichment programs is available starting at 10 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 4. Register online at cityofhenderson.com. Walk-in registration for any program may be made in person at recreation centers starting Monday, Jan. 11

Full-Service Recreation Center to Serve Residents 50+
December 21, 2009 – Henderson, NV – The City of Henderson Parks and Recreation Department opened the new Heritage Park Senior Facility on Dec. 16. The 29,667-square-foot building, located at 300 S. Racetrack Rd., will serve as a recreation center for adults 50+. Mayor Andy Hafen, Councilwoman Gerri Schroder, City Manager Mark Calhoun, and Assistant City Manager Bristol Ellington were on hand to welcome and greet the center’s first patrons. While the recreation center is open to the public now, an official grand opening celebration will be held in early 2010.

Heritage Park Senior Facility features a commercial kitchen, dance room, craft rooms, conference room, demonstration kitchen, game room, classrooms, health screening rooms, television/media room, congregate dining room, wellness center, café and lounge equipped with WiFi, and a fitness room featuring the latest cardio equipment. The recreation center is also home to a library, which will be operated in partnership with Henderson Libraries.
“We’re very pleased to be pursuing LEED Gold certification for this building, which truly blends form and function,” said Mary Ellen Donner, director, City of Henderson Parks and Recreation Department. “So many elements are eco-friendly and energy efficient, including a ground source geothermal sustainable energy system, flooring made from recycled products, and insulated skylights and windows to optimize natural lighting. It’s a striking building that will truly enhance the quality of life for Henderson’s 50+ residents.”
Heritage Park Senior Facility will offer a wide variety of recreation programs, including art classes, cooking demonstrations, fitness programs, and dance classes. Its hours of operation are 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday; 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday; and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday.
The estimated cost of construction is $11.7 million. Carpenter Sellers Associates is the architect and Rafael Construction Inc. is the general contractor. Also located on the 160-acre Heritage Park campus, Heritage Park Aquatic Complex (310 S. Racetrack Rd.) is in its final stages of construction and is expected to be complete in winter 2010. It will feature an instructional pool and a competition pool.

December 17, 2009 – Henderson, NV – The Henderson Commemorative Beautification Commission (HCBC) announced the winners of its 2009 annual holiday decorating contest at a ceremony held at the city’s Winterfest celebration last weekend. Nearly 50 entries were received in all. Winners include:

The Henderson Commemorative Beautification Commission is comprised of appointed citizen volunteers. The commission works to develop plans for the beautification of public areas within Henderson city limits.
