A Brief Story of the Miracle of Chanukah


Chanukah celebrates the victory of the Maccabees, a small band of Jewish patriots, over the mighty armies of Syrian King Antiochus. When they restored the Holy Temple in Jerusalem, the Maccabees found one jar of pure oil, enough to keep the menorah burning for just one day. But a miracle happened, and the oil burned for eight days. Each night of the holiday, we light one more candle, exchange gifts, play dreidel, and eat fried latkes and donuts to remember this victory for religious freedom and the miracle of the oil. Artist of the Month           Don Rickles - Picture



Don Rickles was born in the New York City borough of Queens to Jewish parents Max and Etta Rickles. He grew up in the borough’s Jackson Heights neighborhood. After graduating from Newtown High School, he served in the U.S. Navy in World War II aboard the USS Cyrene as a S1/c until he was honorably discharged in 1946. Two years later he studied at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, and played occasional bit parts on television...
