Passage of SCHIP Bill Will Provide

Health Care for 11 Million Children

Congresswoman Dina Titus of Nevada’s Third District released the following statement today on the passage of the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP)  reauthorization bill, which will provide health care coverage for 7 million children while expanding coverage to an additional 4 million children.  The bill will now go to the President’s desk for his signature.

“With a slumping economy, record unemployment, and rising health care costs, families across Nevada and our nation are struggling to afford health care for their children.  Making too much to receive Medicaid and not making enough to afford private insurance, too many hard-working people fall between the cracks leaving their children without the care they need to grow up healthy and strong.”

“In Nevada alone there are an estimated 107,000 children who lack health insurance.  Under this bill 37,400 children could be given the coverage they need, reducing the number of uninsured children by more than one third.   With this legislation, the federal government is living up to its end of the bargain to care for our most vulnerable, our nation’s children.”
