GOP Plays Party Politics on Economic Recovery

While President Obama and Senator Reid Work to Deliver Help to Struggling Families

As you may have seen in this week’s news, Republican politicians are resorting to their Bush-era method of partisanship over substantive action.

Throughout the debate on Economic Recovery, Republicans-- including Senator John Ensign-- have been digging in their heels to obstruct President Obama’s recovery bill. At the same time, Ensign and his colleagues have offered no solutions to bring much needed relief to Nevada families, but instead offer the same failed policies of the Bush Administration that led to this crisis.

This is nothing new from a party with no interest in helping the middle class.  But, working to block a bill that would provide billions of dollars of assistance to Nevada during one the state’s worst budget slumps in decades is a tragic new low.

While Senator Ensign and his Washington DC cronies have been trying to get this recovery bill killed, Senator Harry Reid has been working diligently with President Obama to ensure this much needed shot-in-the-arm to our economy passes.

Reid has also held multiple meetings with President Obama’s administration to ensure the bill provides assistance for specific problems effecting Nevadans, including: our high unemployment, our record number of home foreclosures and our need to improve our roads and infrastructure.

The Las Vegas Sun ran an article last Thursday detailing some of the direct benefit Nevada would receive from the president’s and Reid’s work:

- Creating approximately 62,000 jobs.

- Making Work Pay tax cuts to working individuals and families

- Providing money for widening and improving I-15, US 95 and the 215 beltway

- Allocating millions for mass transit projects

- Funding school construction and renovation

- Providing additional funds for unemployment benefits, Medicaid, and Nevada Check Up

However, our Democratic elected officials need your help. A progressive organization, Progress Now, has created an online petition urging Republican elected officials to put aside party politics and work in a bipartisan manner to bring the economic change we need.

With your voice, added to those of Senator Reid and Congresswomen Berkley and Titus, we can let Senator Ensign and the GOP know that the time has come to start addressing the economic crisis that has brought such hardship to ordinary Nevadans.

Click here to sign the online petition and let John Ensign and the GOP know that Nevadans voted for change, not the same DC party politics and failed Bush Administration policies.

Today (February 10,) the United States Senate passed the Economic Recovery Act of 2009 – the federal legislation geared to provide the American economy with a much-needed shot in the arm after eight years of the destructive economic policies of the Bush Administration.

Due to the hard work and dogged persistence of Senator Harry Reid, the state of Nevada will receive hundreds of millions in critical funds for essential state programs. At a time when the state is facing one of the worst budget deficits in years and while its governor fails to provide leadership on the critical issues of today, Senator Reid has worked night and day to help Nevada families.

The Economic Recovery Act of 2009 will help jump-start Nevada’s economy, cut taxes for middle class families and create good paying jobs by developing renewable energy in Nevada.
