Vegas PBS Creates Buzz for the 2009 CCSD Spelling Bee

Finals Air February 22 on Channel 10

The best and brightest spellers in the Clark County School District (CCSD) have been battling for weeks to be named the CCSD 2009 Spelling Bee Champion and on Wednesday, Feb. 18, three champions will be crowned as the finals end at the Vegas PBS studios.  The spelling bee finals will air Sunday, Feb. 22 on Vegas PBS channel 10 at 11 a.m. and will repeat on Cox Cable channel 111 at 7 p.m.

The remaining 21 students, seven each in the sixth, seventh and eighth grade divisions, have faced several tests of their spelling skills in order to reach the finals. Students began their trip to the finals at their local middle schools where a written spelling exam was given to every student in the sixth, seventh and eighth grade. The top student in each grade advanced to a regional examination where another written test was given. The 15 students in each grade who scored highest at the regional level advanced to the semi-finals. During the semi-finals, the students faced their first oral spelling test and students were eliminated by misspelling a word until seven remained in each grade.

The students will “spell down” in the finals until a champion and runner-up remain in each grade with the champion advancing to the State Spelling Bee later this year.
