Today Congress Took Bold Action to Create Jobs

Congresswoman Dina Titus of Nevada’s Third District released the following statement today (February 13, 2009) on the American Recovery and Reinvestment conference report which passed by a vote of 246 to 183.

“Today, this Congress took bold action by passing an economic recovery plan that will create or save 3.5 million jobs across the country at a time when we face unprecedented economic challenges.  In Nevada, unemployment is above 9 percent and we lead the nation in the rate of foreclosures.  Gaming revenue dropped 10 percent last year, and high costs from health care to a college education are stretching families to their limit.

“With this critical legislation, we are beginning the long and difficult process of restoring our economic security and putting our economy back on the right track.  In my district alone, this plan will create or save more than 11,000 jobs, and 34,000 jobs statewide.

“The plan makes much-needed investments in our aging infrastructure and can help bridge the growing budget gap that threatens vital education programs.  With one of the biggest tax cuts in history, it provides 95 percent of Americans with tax relief and will help Nevada diversify our economy with tax incentives for renewable energy, making us less dependent on the tourism and gaming industry.  And with unprecedented accountability and transparency measures, the American people will know that the money will be spent wisely and effectively.”
