Yesterday's message
brings up a lot of questions. Once we accept that difficult people are sent into
our lives by the Light to help us make our correction, it can send our minds
reeling in a million and one directions.
How do we know just what the lesson is?!
Focus on your reaction and you will figure it out. The restriction involved in
not blaming or hurting or running away from others will reveal Light, giving you
greater clarity.
Today, remember step 2 of the Proactive Formula taught in Power of Kabbalah
Level 1: the reaction is the enemy, not the other person.
Your soul
is on a multi-lifetime journey of correction. The difficult people you encounter
are sent to help you complete this journey. Meaning, every difficult interaction
is supposed to strengthen and teach you something.
That annoying colleague you wish would be transferred? He's in your life for
this purpose. That overbearing in-law you wish would move to another state?
She's in your life for this purpose. Every single human who crosses your path,
from your mom to your landlord, are here for this purpose of helping you learn
and grow.
Today, change the way you see the "annoying people." Instead of avoiding them,
or hating them, ask, "What are they teaching me?"
"The
more he feels joy and inner satisfaction, the more he will merit the supernal
Light. And if he should persevere with this effort, then there is no doubt that
the Holy Spirit will rest upon him."
- Letter from Rav Brandwein to Rav Berg, March 29th, 1965
Today, whatever you do, do it with joy.
Life appears complicated, but
it's not. We complicate our own lives. We create chaos out of order. We mess
things up, continually making matters worse because we just don't understand
what life is about or how it works.
The first thing we need to understand is that life is as simple as
darkness and Light. I am not
speaking metaphorically when I say Light. Only two things exist in this world:
darkness and Light. Life appears complicated because darkness has a nearly
endless variety of shades, and Light comes in countless colors.
Nonetheless, at the heart of all that exists, you will either find darkness or
Light.
Today, put your tasks and thoughts into two columns: darkness and light. At the
end of the day, see what you can do to eliminate those things that fall into the
'darkness' category. And do less 'darkness' tomorrow.
Imagine an old lady on the corner of a busy intersection. A passerby attempts to help her cross the street. She politely refuses. He tries again. She still refuses, now somewhat annoyed at his insistence.
Why is she annoyed? Because she has no desire to cross the street. She’s merely standing at the intersection waiting for the bus to arrive.
Sometimes in our zeal to share, we end up forcing our kindness on people who don’t want it. For real sharing to take place, there must be a willing receiver, and an actual desire to take possession of the offering.
Pay attention to how you give today. Make sure there’s someone receiving on the other end.
Being
"spiritual" means many things to many people. Certainly one aspect of it is the
constant battle to get out of our heads, to see beyond whatever it is we're
obsessing about so that we can be of service to others.
It's like we live in these tiny, cramped cubicles with full-length mirrors
hanging on the walls. All we see and think about is "me".
Step outside your cubbyhole today. Reprogram your operating consciousness from
"What can you do for me?" to "What I can do for you?"
And enjoy the exhilaration that comes along with it.
The body
consciousness has an attribute of laziness, of keeping things to itself. That's
why it requires so much effort to give of ourselves. And yet, we are not our
body. The body is merely a vehicle for the soul.
We don't think we are the computer just because we use one, do we?
Take a few steps back today and ponder this. Notice how often your soul says
"Yes, do it!" and your body says, "Ah, don't bother."
