While the Republican spin machine has been hard at work twisting the facts about the recent economic recovery legislation, Senator Reid and other Nevada Democratic elected officials have been hard at work ensuring critical federal funds reach Nevada.
This weekend, the Las Vegas Sun’s Lisa Mascaro took the flawed Republican line of thinking to task, highlighting the invaluable work of Senator Harry Reid. Reid worked hard to ensure Nevada did not get shortchanged by securing $1.5 billion dollars for our state.
Republicans,
who from the start opposed the economic
recovery
bill that will provide much-needed help to all Nevadans, are now complaining
that the bill doesn’t provide enough funding to the state. Wait a minute…are
Republicans saying that they would have voted in favor of the bill that included
even more spending? No. Of course not. This is just a Republican attempt to
defend voting against a bill that will help create much needed jobs in Nevada.
And what they also aren’t telling you is that years of Republican efforts to shortchange critical services such as education and health care are at the root of the problem. Even Andrew Clinger, state budget director for a Republican governor, says the state’s fiscal policies have resulted in Nevadans getting back just 65 cents for every tax dollar they put into the federal system.
Without
Senator Reid in Washington looking out for our interests, Nevada would not have
secured
its large increase in Medicaid funding, which will help free up money in the
state budget to pay for education and other important services.
But Reid’s help for our state doesn’t stop there.
Recently, he announced that he had secured an additional $100 million in funds for Nevada, including $18.7 million for roads and transportation, nearly $15 million for energy projects, $5.4 million for schools and $4.6 million for health care. These funds are badly needed in Nevada during this budget crisis.
Be sure to call Senator Reid at 702-388-5020 or 775-686-5750 to thank him for his dedicated leadership in ensuring Nevadans continue to receive their share of federal dollars.
