Vegas PBS Receives National Honors from Corporation for Public Broadcasting
Las Vegas Affiliate Wins My Source Community Impact Awards For Education
The awards ceremony will take place as part of the CPB/PBS-hosted Council of Chief State School Officers Legislative Conference on Saturday, March 7 at The Westin Washington, D.C. City Center.
The March 7 awards dinner will begin with the CPB’s presentation of the prestigious Fred Rogers Award for Excellence in Children’s Educational Media. The Fred Rogers Award, followed by the My Source awards, provides an educational arc of commitment and achievement through public television stations benefiting the American people.
“Vegas PBS is extremely honored to be recognized by the CPB for our Learning Tools for blind and visually impaired children and TeacherLine programs,” said Tom Axtell, general manager. “It is truly a testament to the hard work and dedication of my staff and volunteers that we are receiving not one, but two awards, and I feel this is a great indicator of how we continue to meet our community’s needs for education and technology each day.”
The Vegas PBS Learning Tools for the blind and visually impaired provide an interactive language arts and Braille experience for parents and children that provide three days of 30 to 45-minute activities for families. The kits utilize Vegas PBS’ programming and extend on screen learning with educational materials designed for children enrolled in kindergarten through third grade. For additional information about Family Literacy Kits or to order one, please call 702-799-1010.
Vegas PBS TeacherLine offers online professional development courses to pre K-12 teachers and districts. The program’s specially trained, certified facilitators lead over 90 top-quality, standards-based courses that span the entire curriculum. Vegas PBS has offered TeacherLine courses, provided by PBS and the U.S. Department of education, for over four years. As a result, more than 2,400 teachers have been able to meet certification requirements.
