Las Vegas Affiliate Wins My Source Community Impact Awards For Educatio |
Vegas PBS received two My Source Community Impact Awards for Education from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) on Saturday, March 7 in Washington, DC at the Council of Chief State School Officers/Public Broadcasting Executive Summit.

PBS received the two “My Source Community Impact Awards for Education” for the
station’s efforts in the creation, distribution and promotion of its Vegas PBS
Learning Tools for the blind and visually impaired, and its TeacherLine
professional development program.
Vegas PBS’ General Manager Tom Axtell was also a keynote speaker at the event, speaking on behalf of the many resources and educational programs public television offers throughout communities across the country. Vegas PBS has been a model for the public television community with its various educational programs throughout Las Vegas, and Axtell used his station as a blueprint for the many benefits provided by public television.
The My Source awards were presented to Axtell by CPB’s Senior Vice President of Education and Children’s Content Dr. Susan Zelman.
“Education is a core value of public service media, on air, online and in the community,” said Pat Harrison, president and CEO of CPB. “CPB congratulates Vegas PBS for this important commitment to community and our country through education.”
The Vegas PBS Learning Tools for the blind and visually impaired provide an interactive language arts and Braille experiences for parents and children. The kits utilize Vegas PBS’ programming and extend on screen learning with educational materials designed for children in kindergarten through third grade. Partners for the Vegas PBS Learning Tools include the MGM Mirage Voice Foundation, Paul E. & Helen S. Meyer Foundation, Clark County School District (CCSD), CCSD’s Vision Impaired Services Department, Nevada Blind Children’s Foundation, Nevada Talking Books and WGBH-TV (Boston.) Students from Las Vegas’ Gilbert Magnet School for Communication and Creative Arts were selected to record audio descriptions.
Concept design and testing for the Visual Family Literacy Kits originated with and was conducted by the Vegas PBS’ Educational Media Services and Ready To Learn departments,
Vegas PBS TeacherLine offers online professional development courses to pre K-12 teachers and districts. The program’s specially trained, certified facilitators lead over 90 top-quality, standards-based courses that span the entire curriculum. Vegas PBS has offered TeacherLine courses, provided by PBS and the U.S. Department of education, for over four years. As a result, more than 2,400 teachers have been able to meet certification requirements.
