Saint Patrick's Day (Irish: Lá ’le Pádraig or Lá Fhéile Pádraig), colloquially St. Paddy's Day or Paddy's Day, is an annual feast day which celebrates Saint Patrick  (circa 385–461), one of the patron saints of Ireland, and is generally celebrated on 17 March.  The day is the national holiday of the Irish people, it is widely celebrated In the U.S.A., but is not an official holiday.  It became a feast day in the Roman Catholic Church due to the influence of the Waterford-born Franciscan scholar Luke Wadding in the early part of the 17th century, and is a holy day of obligation for Roman Catholics in Ireland. The date of the feast is occasionally moved by church authorities when March 17 falls during Holy Week; the last two times this happened were in 1940 when Saint Patrick's Day was observed on 3 April in order to avoid it coinciding with Palm Sunday, and it happened again most recently in 2008, when it was held on 15 March for the novus ordo liturgy and April 2 for the traditional Latin Mass to avoid the second day in Holy Week.. Children's Heart Foundation to Award Smart Heart Scholarships

Foundation will award two Nevada college-bound students $2500

Children’s Heart Foundation will make it a little easier for two of Nevada’s graduating high school seniors to attend college this fall by awarding $2500 scholarships to two qualified students who have excelled academically and have been affected by heart conditions.

To be eligible to receive one of the Smart Heat Scholarships, applicants must attend a Nevada public or private high school, have a minimum 3.0 GPA, be attending a four year college or university following graduation, and be a congenital heart disease patient currently seen by a pediatric cardiologist. Students meeting the eligibility requirements are encouraged to submit an application with a resume, cover letter, and high school transcript to the Children’s Heart Foundation. Along with the application, students must submit a letter from the patient’s pediatric cardiologist that includes diagnosis and last medical visit, an essay on how experiences related to heart issues will help later in life, and two letters of recommendation.

Applications should be submitted to Children’s Heart Foundation no later than Friday, May 1, 2009 and winners will be notified by July 10, 2009. Scholarship applications are available for download at www.chfn.org.  If you have any questions regarding the scholarship or are interested in sponsorship opportunities please contact Renee Rietgraf, Development Manager, at (702) 967-3522 or  [email protected].
