Congresswoman
Dina Titus of Nevada’s Third District announced the projects that she is seeking
funding for through the appropriations process. In order to increase
transparency and openness in the funding process, Titus posted to her website
every request she submitted to the House Appropriations Committee.
“As the Representative of Nevada’s Third District, I am committed to fighting on behalf of the needs of my constituents and my community,” Congresswoman Titus said. “There are a number of worthy projects in Southern Nevada that need the investment and support of the federal government to become a reality. The projects that I have requested through the appropriations process are ones that I believe deserve funding to strengthen our community, create jobs, and bring economic development to Southern Nevada.”
Titus’ requests are only for public and non-profit organizations and include funding for:
- Henderson Solar Energy Project, Henderson, NV: $2,500,000. Funds will support the installation of solar panels on a 32-acre site adjacent to the Kurt R. Segler Water Reclamation Facility in the City of Henderson. Ultimately, the project seeks to produce 6 megawatts of electricity to power the water reclamation facility, reducing the city’s purchase of electricity by as much as 20 percent, providing a major savings for city taxpayers.
- Nevada Cancer Institute, Cancer Education and Outreach Services, Las Vegas, NV: $500,000. Funds will support cancer education and outreach services for Nevadans, including cancer patient navigation, train-the-trainer sessions and implementation of wellness and prevention strategies
- Foreclosure Prevention and Intervention Program at the City of Las Vegas, Las Vegas, NV: $1,000,000. Funds will allow the city of Las Vegas to create a program that will bring together government agencies, housing counseling agencies, lenders and nonprofit organizations. The program will have a three tiered approach and will provide prevention education through 1) outreach and awareness, 2) mortgage modification assistance to homeowners, and 3) help to families who can no longer afford their mortgage transition into affordable rental housing.
- Nevada National Guard Counterdrug Program, Carson City, NV: $4,250,000. The purpose of this request is to ensure the continued operation of the Nevada National Guard Counterdrug Program. This request is a valuable use of taxpayer funds because it will ensure millions of dollars worth of illegal drugs are removed from our streets and enable the Nevada National Guard to continue its efforts to educate youth about the harmful effect of illegal drugs.
