Marlena Shaw performing with Count Basie Orchestra

While everyone agrees that
Marlena Shaw
is a national treasure, it’s difficult to
categorize her. Both Downbeat and Record World
have named her
“Best Female Singer,” and many have compared her range,
class and swing that of to eternal jazz lights
like
Sarah Vaughn, Dinah Washington,
and
Nancy Wilson. But she’s also
been called a “soul legend,” both before and
after her successful detour into disco.
Marlena’s a lyricist and composer as well -- for
example, her ballad “You” was recorded by both
Stanley Turrentine and
Benny Golson.
Given her 40-year plus boundary-busting career,
such labeling confusion is inevitable. It’s
easier and more descriptive to think of Marlena
as a natural element: like water, which we
recognize in a gleaming dewdrop or clear
mountain stream, Marlena’s music is
unmistakable. Whether she’s singing jazz, R&B,
pop, rock, soul, disco, blues or gospel, her
originality makes such distinctions irrelevant,
and each song becomes intimate and new. Marlena
is a soulful survivor who’s been there, and more
than once. But her music is never heavy -- where
others might communicate pain or despair, she
offers wisdom and hope, laced with humor.

Milo
Ventimiglia
and
Masi Oka were spotted at
LAVO
inside
The Palazzo
on Friday night. In town for a
wedding, the stars of
NBC’s Heroes gathered with a
group of guy friends, including sexy British
import and
Tony Award
nominee
Ben Chaplin.
The group held court at a dance floor table in
the nightclub, where an extra security guard was
needed to keep the females at bay. They were
clamoring for pictures with newly single
Ventimiglia, who recently split with Heroes
co-star Hayden Panettiere, but it was clearly
boys night out as they drank Belvedere
cocktails, and danced to the sounds of DJ
Skratchy.
Nearby at a table with
LAVO partners
Noah
Tepperberg and
Jason Strauss
were director
Brett Ratner,
comedian
Pauly Shore
and
Evan Seinfeld of
The Spyderz.
Jorge
Garcia of ABC’s LOST and a large group of guys
gathered at TAO Friday night to celebrate a
friend’s upcoming marriage. The bachelor party
began with
dinner for twelve at the Asian bistro, where they dined on Kobe beef and sushi before heading up to a VIP table in the moat section of the nightclub. Garcia graciously
took photos with several adoring female fans before toasting the groom to be.
Also
dining at TAO on Friday was DeAnna Pappas,
reality star of The Bachelor and The
Bachelorette. Pappas was with a group of friends
and former contestants
from various seasons of the two shows, including
Jeremy Anderson, who unsuccessfully vied for her
love on season four
of The Bachelorette. After enjoying
specialties from the kitchen, Happy Ending shots and sake bombs, they journeyed to the nightclub and a table on the dance floor.
Yet another star of the small screen was spotted in the nightclub as Kunal Nayyar from The Big Bang Theory on CBS also partied at TAO.
