$50 cancer screenings offered from May 18 to 22, 2009 In honor of women and the celebration of Mother’s in May, Nevada Cancer Institute is offering reduced-cost $50 screening mammograms to Nevada women over the age of 40 from May 18 – 22.
Mammograms should be performed once a year beginning at age 40, per American Cancer Society guidelines. “Part of Nevada Cancer Institute’s mission as the state’s designated cancer institute is to ensure that all Nevada women are provided the opportunity to receive mammogram screenings,” said Tracie Stuckey-Arana Nevada Cancer Institute breast imaging manager. “During Breast Cancer Awareness Month last October, we offered lower-cost mammograms and saw an overwhelming response. We hope to attract even more women for this important and crucial screening this May.” Mammography can detect approximately 85 percent of breast cancers and can detect a lump an average of one to three years before a woman can using self breast examinations alone. Nevada Cancer Institute uses digital mammography that significantly improves the capability to diagnose breast cancer earlier in some women. Early detection and access to current treatments can dramatically influence outcomes. Despite the importance of mammography, only 70 percent of Nevada women have had a mammogram within the past two years, compared to 75 percent nationally. “Breast cancer is the leading cancer in women, and the second leading cause of cancer-related death in women. Prevention and early detection are extremely important,” said Karen Milligan, M.D., medical oncologist. “When breast cancer is detected early and appropriately treated, it is highly curable.” Mammograms can change over time; therefore, it is important for the doctor to look at previous mammogram films for comparison. Digital technology allows clinicians more opportunities for diagnosis compared with older, film-based technology.
