Free Junior Naturalist Workshops Introduce Kids to Outdoor Exploration
The Henderson Bird Viewing Preserve (2400 B Moser Dr.) is hosting free Junior Naturalist workshops to introduce kids to the enjoyment of the outdoors and nature. Workshops will be held from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m. on Saturday, July 25 and again on Saturday, Aug. 1. Participants need only attend one session. The workshop is open to kids ages 6-12, and registration is accepted online at cityofhenderson.com (activity 193000-64 for July and 193000-65 for August) or at any City of Henderson recreation center. The program is sponsored by the City of Henderson Parks and Recreation Department.

Junior naturalists will go out into the field with a knowledgeable Henderson Bird Viewing Preserve staff member to collect data on weather conditions, plants, animals, and birds. The hands-on workshop focuses on outdoor exploration and investigation and encourages a respect for the natural world.

City of Henderson to Host Howie Landa’s Hoop Camp in July
Kids and teens hoping to hone their basketball skills can take part in Howie Landa’s Hoop Camp from 9 a.m. to noon July 13-15, at Del Webb Middle School, 2200 Reunion Dr. The three-part program is open to players ages 8-16 for $75 per person, which includes a camp shirt. The camp is sponsored by the City of Henderson Parks and Recreation Department.
Howie Landa, a former WBL and WNBA assistant coach and former UNLV Runnin’ Rebels head coach, provides instruction on the mechanics of basketball, including ball handling, defense, passing and shooting. The camp is designed to provide players with a strong foundation on the fundamentals while giving them the confidence they need to improve their skills and work to their potential.
“It’s not every day that kids can learn to play basketball from one of the premier coaches in the nation,” said Ted Lockamon, Recreation Services supervisor for the City of Henderson Parks and Recreation Department. “Landa is known for his ability to inspire players to strive for greatness, and he’s an outstanding role model for our young players.”

The City of Henderson Parks and Recreation Department is hosting a free bus tour that highlights current and upcoming parks and trails on the east side of Henderson. The bus departs from Valley View Recreation Center (500 Harris St.) at 8 a.m. on Saturday, July 18. The two-hour tour is open to participants 14 years of age and up, and registration is required to ensure seating is available. The tour will highlight popular parks and trails, such as Equestrian Park and River Mountains Loop Trail, and introduce those under construction or undergoing improvements, including Heritage Park, UPRR Trail and Downs 5/Downtown Trail connections.
