Reid
Launches PSA to Encourage Nevada Veterans to Enroll in
College
New
education benefit applies to veterans of the wars in Iraq
and Afghanistan
Nevada
Senator Harry Reid today released a public service
announcement to encourage all Nevada veterans to take
advantage of the 21st Century GI Bill of Rights and sign up
for college at Nevada’s public universities. Under Reid’s
leadership, the long overdue modernized GI bill expands
education benefits for the veterans of the wars in Iraq and
Afghanistan. The new GI Bill of Rights goes into effect on
August 1 and eligible veterans will receive the maximum
benefit which includes the cost of tuition and fees for four
years at Nevada’s colleges and universities.
The new GI Bill will:
· Provide the maximum benefit of the cost of tuition
and fees for four years at University of Nevada and UNLV.
· Give veterans up to 15 years after they leave active
duty to use their education benefits;
· Increase the housing allowance for veterans who are
studying;
· Provide an annual stipend of $1,000 for books and
supplies;
· Create a one-time rural benefit payment for eligible
individuals;
· Allow enrolled service members to transfer unused
educational benefits to their spouses or children.
“This is unquestionably the right thing to do for our troops
and the families that support them,” said Reid. “I am very
pleased that this support has been expanded for those
serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. I encourage all of Nevada’s
veterans to take advantage of this terrific program.”
More Than
$5.5 Million in Economic Recovery Funding Headed To UNLV
Funds
will explore new technologies to reduce energy consumption
by making homes more energy efficient
Nevada Senator Harry Reid
released the following statement today following the
announcement by U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu of more than
$5.5 million dollars to explore new technologies aimed at
reducing consumer’s energy bills.
“This is an important clean energy research investment in
Southern Nevada that will accelerate development of new
technologies for homeowners that want to have more control over
their energy costs. Improving consumer demand response options
can save on energy bills and reduce the need for expensive and
polluting power plants,” Reid said.
21st Century GI Bill
American
soldiers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan can have a tough
time finding jobs, especially in this difficult economy. For
many of them, a college education just isn’t affordable. That’s
why I worked with my colleague, Senator Jim Webb of Virginia, to
craft a
21st Century GI Bill for the modern soldier.
Nevada’s veterans can attend any school in the state, be it
a university or community college, and get a quality education
and training for their careers. This takes effect on August 1,
and I want to
encourage our state’s veterans to enroll.
Help for Nevada's Homeowners

It’s
no secret that
Nevada’s homeowners are struggling with slumping home values
and the threat of foreclosure. Often, they feel they have
nowhere to turn and no one to ask for guidance. That’s why I
have instructed my offices to take on
casework for Nevada’s troubled homeowners. While we won’t
be able to solve every homeowner’s problem, I will be able to
help Nevadans get in touch with experts who may be able to help
with financial counseling, legal aid and other services. My goal
is to ensure Nevadans are able to access as much information as
possible in order to prevent foreclosure whenever possible.
