December 30, 2009 – Henderson, NV – The City of Henderson is hosting a public meeting to provide residents with an update on the Whitney Mesa Trail and Trailhead project from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 21, at Whitney Ranch Recreation Center, 1575 Galleria Dr.
The Whitney Mesa Trail and Trailhead is located on a 100-acre site that will include a mix of open space and recreation amenities, including scenic overlooks, picnic areas, playgrounds, and 2 miles of recreational trails that will provide connectivity to Whitney Ranch Recreation Center and Whitney Mesa Nature Preserve.


Representatives from the City of Henderson Parks and Recreation Department’s Park Planning division will be on hand to offer insight and discuss project updates.
A portion of funding for the project has been provided by the Bureau of Land Management through the sale of public lands as authorized by the Southern Nevada Public Land Management Act (SNPLMA).
The City of Henderson has been awarded more than $235 million in SNPLMA funding for more than 30 parks and trails projects, which has helped the city keep pace with an increased demand for outdoor recreation opportunities in the community.

Wii® Bowling Tournament January 16, 2010
December 28, 2009 – Henderson, NV – The City of Henderson Parks and Recreation Department’s Downtown Recreation Center (105. W. Basic Rd.) is hosting a Wii bowling tournament at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 16. Participation is $2 per person. Register online at cityofhenderson.com (activity 381010-53) starting Jan. 6. The tournament features friendly bowling competition, snacks, and prizes. People of all ages are welcome to participate.

“What makes our Wii Sports tournaments so unique is that they give everyone a chance to participate and succeed, regardless of age or ability,” said Nick McLemore, Recreation Services supervisor, City of Henderson Parks and Recreation Department. “Wii technology makes it possible for anyone to enjoy a sports experience and, unlike traditional video games, it gets people up and off the couch to do it.”

Spring Flag Football
Registration Starts January 4, 2010
December 24, 2009 – Henderson, NV – Registration for the City of Henderson Parks and Recreation Department’s spring adult flag football program begins Monday, Jan. 4. Registration is $200 per team and must be made in person at Arroyo Grande Sports Complex, 298 Arroyo Grande Blvd. Hours are 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. weekdays and 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday. It is recommended that teams have identical colored jerseys and players wear mouthguards.The department’s program is non-contact. Teams can choose from the men’s 5 on 5 league or the co-recreational 6 on 6 league. Both programs feature 7-game seasons with play taking place on Sunday afternoons and evenings. Season play begins Feb. 21.
“Flag football has been a staple at U.S. military bases throughout the world since the 1940’s, when traditional football was modified so servicemen could still enjoy football, but with no contact, and therefore less likelihood of injury,” said Ted Lockamon, Recreation Services supervisor, City of Henderson Parks and Recreation Department. “Today, more than 20 million people throughout the world play and enjoy flag football. It’s a sport that continues to grow in popularity, particularly here in Southern Nevada.”
