Each week we track the 5 college hoop teams that I have determined will show a “positive return on investment” by season’s end. Last year’s Pos 5 came in at 62% ATS. A nice chunk of change come “March Madness.”
This year I have selected Cornell, Tenn., Siena, Minn. and the Cal. Bears.
After going 8-0 SU and 4-2 ATS this past week, the Pos 5 stand at 31-20-2 ATS and 40-19 SU for a return of $13,460 on $11,660 invested, based on $220 per wager. The future Wall Street/banking big-bonus recipients of the Ivy League’s, Cornell are a fine 11 wins and only 2 losses thus far on the season.
But mighty Kansas looms on the “middle of the country” horizon (Wed). Last night, the Big Red, behind Jeff Foote’s 22 points crushed Div III opponent Penn State Behrend 73-49. This virtual practice game (a work out, with some in attendance cheering for the other side) gave 16 Cornell players a chance at some playing time, with 10 of the 16 posting 2 points or more. Adam Kaiser led the visiting Lions with 9 points. Cornell has one more “fluff” game before taking on the Jayhawks. We of course just hope that they “cover” while still being able to walk at the end of the game.
Also yesterday, the 14th ranked Vols of Tennessee held inside dominance over top 20 opponent Memphis by the score of 66-59 as a 2 1/2 point “dog.” The Vols were able to overcome a 7 min. stretch without hitting a field goal—while improving to 10-2 on the year. The Golden Bears of Cal. were victorious in two games, defeating the Wolverines of Utah Valley State (another “virtual practice”) 85-51. Then on Wednesday they defeated UCSB 87-66 as a 20-point favorite, they cut it close, but an ATS win “is a win, is a win.”
The Bears next travel “down the road a piece” to take on Pac 10 rival Stanford, on Sat. Our “weak link” Golden Bears are a respectable 8 and 4 SU while coming in at a “squeaky” plus, ATS at 5-4-1.
The Golden Gophers, meanwhile, were led by senior guard Lawrence Westbrook’s 29 points, in a narrow defeat (while not covering) of the Nittany Lions of Penn. St. The Gophers improved to 10-3 overall and 1-0 in league play. They continue league play with two games this coming VCO week, on the road vs the Hawkeyes of Iowa and the Boilermakers of Purdue. Our fifth Pos 5 team member, Siena, played host to a couple of other “Saints” beating and covering vs Saint Josephs-Penn. and were winners SU but not ATS vs the Peacocks of Saint Peters. The “not so divine” Saints are 7-5 ATS and 9-4 SU. While hoping to stay on the “good” side of we “holy” punters, the Saints take on still another “Saint” in the form of Mount Saint Marys on Sat. and then visit Loyola-Maryland on Monday. In fact, the only “secular” team Siena plays in the mostly Catholic Metro Atlantic is Rider.
With 9 games involving the Pos 5 this coming week, we hope to “pad” our plus 60% advantage.
Here’s to a good new (league play half) year and nothing but net...
